Blastoise
- Most Useful Against: Brock, Blaine
Squirtle is the middle-of-the-road option among the starters in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen. It is not as overwhelmingly powerful in the early game as Bulbasaur, but it isn’t as weak as Charmander either. Unfortunately, Blastoise is weaker than both Charizard and Venusaur when fully evolved, mostly because its stat spread is all over the place.
That said, Water-type Pokemon have some of the strongest moves available to them in FRLG, like Surf, Hydro Cannon, and Hydro Pump. Additionally, Blastoise’s excellent defenses make it very difficult to take off the field easily, ensuring the Pokemon almost always has a chance to get off a few moves before it faints.
Nidoking
- Most Useful Against: Lt. Surge, Koga, Blaine, Bruno
Nidoking is the undisputed king of the early game in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, mainly because of how early it comes online if you level up a Nidorino early and get a Moon Stone from Mt. Moon. Nidoking’s strength lies in its coverage moves. From Earthquake to Brick Break, it learns some incredible moves from Technical Machines.
Nidoking mostly wants to learn Physical moves that scale off of Attack, but in a pinch, it can also be taught moves like Flamethrower, Shock Wave, and Blizzard if you’re lacking in a certain type at a crucial juncture.
Dodrio
- Most Useful Against: Erika, Blue
Dodrio is an often-overlooked Flying-type Pokemon because of its unassuming nature that leads it to be underestimated. However, not only does it have an excellent stat spread that outshines both Pidgeot and Fearow, but it also gets access to the best Flying-type move in the game: Drill Peck.
Additionally, Dodrio also offers great utility with access to Tri Attack, which can often inflict a status effect and Body Slam, which is perfect for Paralyzing targets.
Jolteon
- Most Useful Against: Lorelei, Lance, Blue
The Gift Eevee from Celadon City provides players with three options. Vaporeon is out of the picture because Blastoise already fulfills the role of a Water-type powerhouse for the team, and Flareon is not really an option either because of how FRLG’s physical/special typing split works against it.
Jolteon is the only real choice here, which is great because it is one of the strongest non-legendary Electric-types available in the Kanto region.
Snorlax
- Most Useful Against: Agatha, Blue, Sabrina
Snorlax is the dedicated tank for the team, with a monstrous base stat total, incredible bulk, and devastating Attack. Since Shadow Ball is considered a Physical move in Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Snorlax is one of the best users of this move in the game, despite the lack of STAB. Combined with Rest and Sleep Talk, it means Snorlax can self-sustain to no end while dishing out insane damage.
If you prefer your Snorlax to take a more active role instead, you can replace Rest and Sleep Talk with Yawn and Double-Edge, or with Rest and Belly Drum if you’re planning on using him as a dedicated sweeper.
Arcanine/Ninetales
- Most Useful Against: Erika, Agatha, Blue
If you’re playing Pokemon FireRed, you’ll find Growlithe on Routes 7 and 8 as the version exclusive, whereas in Pokemon LeafGreen, Vulpix takes up this slot instead. Both are excellent Fire-type Pokemon that round out the team nicely, though Arcanine is preferred since it has access to STAB Extreme Speed, one of the strongest moves in the entire game.
