Boruto: How The Age Of Shinobi Came To An End, Explained

This article contains spoilers from the Boruto series.

The end of the Age of Shinobi is an ominous event in the Boruto series that fueled fan speculation about the unfortunate fate of the shinobi world. Kawaki Uzumaki did not stutter with his grim declaration in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Chapter 1, seemingly forcing Boruto to accept a future where shinobi don’t exist. Also, Konoha was in ruins while Boruto and Kawaki were preparing to fight each other.

As the Boruto manga drops one chapter after another, bits and pieces of information lead readers closer to the end of the Age of Shinobi. The mystery surrounding the end of the Age of Shinobi will be decoded sooner or later, based on details about Naruto Uzumaki’s whereabouts, Boruto Uzumaki’s dojutsu, sword, and karma power, as well as Kawaki’s motivations.

The End of the Age of Shinobi Is the Only Possible Outcome of Multiple Futures

In the pilot chapter of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Boruto Uzumaki describes the end of the Age of Shinobi as the “only possible outcome,” suggesting that he has attempted to change the future multiple times, but all the outcomes lead him straight to Konoha’s destruction. As fans know, Boruto can see glimpses of future events through Momoshiki’s abilities, allowing him to change his actions and decisions as necessary.

Kashin Koji, with his prescience, allows him to see Boruto’s future, whether the latter’s actions and decisions could result in death or survival. With these abilities, Boruto can see multiple futures and outcomes. Unfortunately, all those futures he saw will lead to the end of the Age of Shinobi, no matter how hard he tries to influence the events leading to that ominous future.

The Age of Shinobi…shall end.—Kawaki

This only means that Boruto and Kawaki are destined to fight each other, despite Boruto’s attempts to save his adoptive brother from the darkness that consumes him. The only way for Boruto to knock some sense into Kawaki is to defeat him in an all-or-nothing battle that will not only determine the future of the world but also the fate of his friends, family, and fellow ninja.

Naruto Uzumaki Isn’t Dead But Sealed

Naruto’s Return Will Only Happen After Boruto Defeats Kawaki

In the first chapter of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, Kawaki also mentioned Naruto Uzumaki, referring to him as the Seventh Hokage, whom he sent to an unknown location. While most fans presumed him dead, it was later revealed that Kawaki sent Naruto, along with Hinata, to the Daikokuten dimension, where time has been frozen. He is sealed inside Kawaki’s pocket dimension while the rest of the world, excluding a select few, mourns his death.

With Kawaki’s statement, it goes without saying that Naruto Uzumaki won’t be returning anytime soon. Even if Jura wreaks havoc in Konoha and goes after Naruto, Kawaki won’t release Naruto. He is expected to remain inside the Daikokuten dimension for quite a long time, and his return could potentially happen after Boruto and Kawaki’s ultimate showdown is finished.

I’ll send you where I sent the Seventh Hokage, Boruto.—Kawaki

Looking back, Kawaki only sealed Naruto for his safety. He wants Naruto to continue surviving in a shinobi world where no enemy, such as the likes of Code, Shinju Clones, and Otsutsuki members, can touch him. His number one goal is to ensure Naruto’s safety, so fans who expect to see Kawaki killing Naruto at the end of the series are unlikely, at least for now.

Konoha Is Destroyed

Possible Reasons Behind Konoha’s Destruction

Interestingly, Konoha was in the worst condition possible at the time when Kawaki told Boruto that the Age of Shinobi was over. The iconic Hokage Rock was destroyed, giving Boruto and Kawaki a fitting backdrop in their final showdown. However, the biggest mystery about this unfortunate situation is the reason why Konoha was destroyed. Who destroyed the village, and where is everyone else? These might be the questions fans have every time they remember the pilot chapter of Boruto.

While the exact reason isn’t clear yet, we can make educated guesses based on the current direction of the Boruto manga. First, it could be Jura who unleashed the full extent of his abilities on Konoha. Second, it could be Code, who has grown stronger after receiving a major power upgrade. Third, it could be BoruShiki, with Momoshiki taking full control of Boruto’s body. Fourth, it could be another Otsutsuki, like Shibai or Akebi, or an entirely new clan member who was powerful enough to obliterate the village. Lastly, it could just be Kawaki, who has grown tired of Konoha’s affairs.
