Can ghost-hunting phenomenon Phasmophobia work as a board game? We’re about to find out

Co-op ghost hunting game Phasmophobia is, somewhat surprisingly, being made into a board game.

Images and a teaser video for the project were shared over the weekend, showing a cardboard tile, card and dice-based reinterpretation of the game playable by four people. Build a haunted property using the tiles, fill it with randomised items, draw a Ghost Type card from the Investigation Pile, pair it with a randomised evidence pool, and get going.

There’s a Ghost Behaviour board that keeps the ghost’s actions feeling unpredictable as you play, and as your sanity depletes (as it does in the video game), the ghost becomes more aggressive. I don’t quite know how you’ll make it scary without all the set dressing and sound effects that accompany the video game experience, but perhaps the tension will translate – who knows? Maybe play it in a haunted house just in case?

Phasmophobia: The Board Game is being made in collaboration with Lost in Cult, which is better known for making bespoke physical editions of culty video games. Phasmophobia will actually be the first board game it’s made, it seems.

Pre-orders are now open ahead of the board game’s estimated Q4 2026 release date. A standard version of Phasmophobia: The Board Game will cost you £80, and a deluxe edition – which features glow in the dark hand prints and foil-backed cards, among other things – will cost £120.

Phasmophobia has been a phenomenal success as a video game, selling more than 25 million copies and transforming the life of originating solo developer Daniel Knight. I went to meet him earlier this year to hear and then tell his incredible Phasmophobia success story.
