Catch Yveltal in Pokemon Legends Z-A: Full Guide & Optimal Build

In Pokemon Legends: Z-A, there’s a wide range of activities to enjoy, even after finishing the game. Catching Yveltal and other Legendary Pokemon is something players will have to do if they want to unlock 100% of the post-game. Players have the chance to get the Kalos trio, which includes Xerneas, Yveltal, and, of course, Zygarde, but there’s a lot to do before they can get them for their collection.

Since these Legendaries are unique and bound to one of the Main Missions, the process of catching them differs a little from previous Pokemon games. This guide contains everything players need to know about catching Yveltal, its best moves, and ideal stats to use it for battles.

Where to Find & How to Catch Yveltal in Pokemon Legends Z-A

To find Yveltal, players first need to complete the Main Mission 37: Operation Protect Lumiose and watch the Post-Credits Scene. After that, players will be called to Hotel AZ and will need to make their Wish as reward for accomplishing Rank A in the AZ Royale. It’s a pretty straightforward path, until players are contacted by ‘L’ again when they’re back in the Hotel.

L will explain to team MZ about The One Who Takes and The One Who Gives, and players need to gather with former members of Team Flare to get more information on these two Pokemon that are said to be fast approaching Lumiose.

The One Who Takes is none other than Yveltal, and in order to face it in combat and catch it, players will have to contact Grisham and Griselle at Cafe Noveau. After a brief talk, they will send the players to find Vinnie at Quasartico Inc. Vinnie will challenge players to face a simulation of three Rogue Mega Evolutions: Victreebel, Tyranitar, and Staryu. Defeat them to proceed with the Mission.

Before proceeding, make sure the Pokemon team used for this fight is at least level 80, and save the game.

Once players have done this, Vinnie and the members of Team Flare Noveau will prompt them to direct their attention to Rouge District’s shopping mall, where Yveltal is approaching.

Go to the marked location, and climb the ladder on the side of the shopping mall, then follow the rooftop path until accessing the dome in the middle of the building. Climb the dome and interact with the ‘!’ mark to begin the battle against Yveltal.

Yveltalis a tough nail to bite, and it will use a lot of annoying moves like Oblivion Wing, Dragon Rush, Hurricane, and Phantom Force. Since the area where players will face this Legendary is a bit cramped, Yveltal will move around the edges, and this will probably lead to some of the Pokemon moves being thwarted by collision.

Try to fight it as close to the middle of the dome as possible. Once Yveltal’s HP is reduced by half, players will notice the arrow pattern indicating its ‘catchability’ increased. Make sure to start throwing Ultra Balls at it before completely weakening it, or

Once players have caught Yveltal, they will be able to fiddle a bit with their Stats and Moveset, and to optimize it for battles, they should aim to get Yveltal with Timid nature (players can change it using mints), since it boosts its Speed (and reduces Attack). Focus its EV training as follows:

  • 252 HP
  • 252 Sp. Atk
  • 6 Speed

Players should use Yveltal with Hurricane, Dark Pulse, Focus Blast, and Oblivion Wing (its signature move), since it’s a special attacker that combines Flying and Dark Special attacks, but if need be, they can also teach it a wide variety of coverage moves, like Heat Wave and Shadow Ball.
