Chainsaw Man dominates the U.S. box office in its opening weekend

Has Sony done it again? Following the success of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which earned over $600 million at the box office, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the $100 million mark worldwide, reaching a global total of $108 million this weekend. The film beat out Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its second week in theaters, as well as Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).

Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, the feature is a direct continuation of Chainsaw Man’s first season. It earned $18.2 million domestically after a strong $5.2 million Saturday and $4.5 million Sunday. Internationally, the MAPPA-produced film added $14.7 million across 46 Sony markets, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million under Sony ($43.1 million international, $18.2 million domestic, according to Deadline). Sony has yet to announce its official box office total.

Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke to Polygon, comparing the film’s projected performance to Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34 million in the U.S. and Canada in 2022 and opened to a similar $18 million domestically. Reze Arc’s debut weekend aligns with that benchmark, while its $108 million worldwide total currently tracks just behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $166.6 million final run. Although it’s unlikely Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc will earn the numbers of mega hit Demon Slayers: Infinity Castle, this is still a huge win for Sony.

Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have effectively leveraged fan engagement to drive their dominance at the anime box office. The Reze Arc marketing campaign launched at Anime Expo Los Angeles in July with a MAPPA panel, exclusive activations, and Pochita photo ops, followed by a major presence at New York Comic Con featuring behind-the-scenes footage, fan raffles, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and influencers alike after the last day of the convention.

2025 is a big year for anime, and for Sony, which has one more anime film debuting this year in JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
