While Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 features an array of interesting characters, the players unanimously agree and who the best character of them all is.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is set in a fictional world where, every year, a whole generation of people gets erased from existence. This is a pretty sombre setting, and Sandfall Interactive managed to make some pretty compelling characters. But even knowing that your end is coming does not make every character in Lumière melancholic. You have a very human set of main characters, Gustave, Lune, Maelle, and Sciel, who all express a wide range of emotions, which is a bit lacking in modern media, where we are plagued by two-dimensional, cookie-cutter characters.
So naturally, every character in the game, be they the protagonists or those more “supporting” ones, is compelling in their own way. But who’s the best character in the game, who’s the fan favorite? Maelle? Lune? Nope!

You’d expect that one of the main protagonists would be the fan favorite, but you’d be wrong. Turns out, absolutely everyone is enamored with Esquie, a powerful being of legend that, in simple terms, transports you around The Continent.
But the main appeal is his personality and the superb voice acting, done by Maxence Cazorla, who is responsible for both the English and the French voiceover. Esquie’s charm stems from his lazy but incredibly supportive nature and perfectly written dialogue. That’s where you get those gems like: “I too am ‘Wooo’, but I’m also ‘Wheee!’ So the ‘Wheee’ balances out the ‘Whooo”. Peak writing!
As for the community reactions, you get comments like: “When I first saw Esquie, I thought he was going to be the cliché annoying mascot character. Little did I know he was going to be the best companion ever. Esquie, mon ami!” from kraft_d on Reddit, or “I immediately liked him, found him very funny. Then as time went on he also became surprisingly deep and always a comforting presence. Love that guy like you won’t believe.” added Garaichu. Some even request that we get Esquie plushies, and we wholeheartedly agree.
As stated, “big and dumb” characters are all over the media, there just for laughs, so it is a welcome change that a character who’d fall into that category turns out to be more than just a comic relief. While all Expedition 33 characters are really great, it is no wonder that the community has chosen Esque as their favorite.
