Consider the lobster? Marathon’s first unexpected mystery could be afoot as players puzzle over multi-coloured shellfish

Marathon’s Sever Slam weekend is over now, and with the game ready to launch later this week, players are now either more convinced they’ll be playing the hell out of it or skipping since it’s not really rewriting the extraction shooter genre. In any case, its early numbers are promising enough, and now we’re hearing about the first traditional Bungie mysteries which have popped up in-game…

Via user AkiAndFam on X/Twitter, we’ve gotten our first look at a regular lobster on Tau Ceti IV that looks quite normal… except its colour changes depending on who’s looking at it. See it for yourself below:

The player briefly described the situation, claiming it was blue for the Assassin player, red for the Triage, and green for the Destroyer. A logical assumption would be to think regular asset textures are randomized for each player to slightly shake things up visually each run, but the Destiny community and those who have followed Bungie for years are used to the developer quietly adding all sorts of little quirks and even hidden treasure hunts and gymkhanas which are completely separate from high-level, endgame content, so maybe this is our first look at weird stuff happening on Tau Ceti IV… beyond the admittedly unnerving world-building.

It’s definitely too early to say whether this is an intended creative decision that hides a hunt for more clues or a puzzle, but the community is already having fun with the idea: “Find a blue, red, and green platform for each corresponding lobster to begin the encounter,” one Halo veteran joked. Meanwhile, other folks who are more immersed in this new Marathon’s backstories are theorizing about the Runners and their connection to material reality: “There must be a lore reason for this? Manipulating the Runners’ memories.”

Whatever ends happening (or not) with the mysterious crustacean, the animal has already become a bit of star that’s receiving regular visitors. When Marathon permanently opens its gates on 5th March, expect enigmas and investigations like this one to pop up all over. Will you be jumping in?
