Don’t feel sad for Take Two’s shareholders over GTA 6 delay: GTA 5 has now sold more copies than the entire population of Brazil

CEO of Take Two Strauss Zelnick has revealed that GTA5 and GTA Online continues its monumental growth twelve years after its release, with GTA5 selling more than the entire population of Brazil.

Speaking to Chris Dring over at The Game Business, Zelnick discussed the continued growth of the current iteration of the open world criminal adventure game, even as GTA6 saw yet another delay into November, 2026.

Zelnick stated: “We continue to supply content to GTA Online, and in fact we’ve had terrific results there. And GTA+ continues to grow its membership. In fact, it’s had 20% growth year-over-year. And GTA 5 has sold in more than 220 million units.”

Just to put that figure into perspective, the entire population of Brazil is estimated to be roughly 213m people, according to Worldometer. Brazil is no slouch either, being the 7th largest country in the world by population. It’s safe to say with those figures in mind, Take Two isn’t exactly in dire waters right now.

Still, the delay of GTA6 is a blow against the industry giant. Take Two’s stock took a tumble following news breaking about the new release date. Meanwhile, protests were held outside Rockstar Games and Take Two’s UK offices due to the sudden firing of staff looking to unionize. Rockstar Games claimed these employees were sharing confidential information.
