Epic Games brings Rocket League inspired basketball to Fortnite

Epic Games might have reached its final evolution. Fortnite is getting a new limited-time game mode that features the characters and setting of Fall Guys — another Epic game — and takes obvious inspiration from Rocket League, the car soccer game from Epic-owned studio Psyonix. The new mode, Crown Jam, launches on Jan. 23 and will be available in Fortnite until Feb. 9.

In Crown Jam, you’ll play as Fall Guys beans in a very silly-looking game that resembles a warped version of basketball. Players will join a team of three to battle against another trio, each trying to score baskets on the opposing hoop. Between the hoops, a massive Fall Guys-style obstacle course. In a press release, Epic calls Crown Jam “basketball meets football meets obstacle course chaos.” Still, it’s easy to see the spirit of Rocket League shining bright in Crown Jam. Taking highly customizable characters into a ridiculous, yet action-packed game that’s something like a mix of soccer, basketball, and a professional stunt show worked for Rocket League and looks like it might do just as well here.

One thing that Fall Guys fans need to note about Crown Jam is the physics will be changing. According to a press release from Epic, “Beans are powered by real physics, so you can feel every jump, tackle, and slam-dunk.” Given Fall Guys and Fortnite both have exaggerated physics for characters, it’s unclear exactly how realistic that’s going to be.

Thankfully, there will also be awards to earn from Crown Jam. The easiest one to earn simply requires you to log into Fall Guys, with the Slam Dunk costume now available for free. If you finish five matches of Crown Jam in Fortnite, you’ll unlock a plush back bling of a blue Fall Guys bean. If you happen to find you’re good at Crown Jam, there are also prizes to be won for ranked play, like a Jam Track and even a back bling of the crown ball.
