Yuto Suzuki’s Sakamoto Days is one of the best shonen manga of the 2020s, and it is only going from strength to strength. Along with great art and creative fight sequences, the series is also known for fantastic characters, be they awesome (and funny) heroes or intimidating (and funny) villains.
In Winter 2025, Sakamoto Days made its anime debut, garnering a polarizing reception. Due to a weird art style and fairly inconsistent animation, the adaptation did OK but struggled to really explode in popularity, at least not to the same extent as a few other recent shonen anime. However, the show has returned for the Summer 2025 season and, surprisingly, Part 2 has been quite a bit better than its predecessor. In fact, it is straight-up great. In celebration of the anime’s improvement, let’s take a look at the profiles of Sakamoto Days‘ main characters.
The focus is on the anime, so there are no spoilers for the manga’s future storylines.
Sakamoto Days Character Chart
Table With The Ages, Birthdays, And Heights Of Sakamoto Days’ Core Characters
Even if we were to solely focus on the anime and not the manga, which has 200+ chapters, Sakamoto Days would still have a substantial number of characters. New Order killers, escaped convicts, hopeful assassins, and members of Slur’s group seem to pop up every other episode; some of them do not stick around, while others become major supporting figures or villains. However, certain Sakamoto Days characters carry the story on their shoulders, even if they might not be the strongest or most entertaining. Let’s focus on them.

Taro Sakamoto
Co-Owner Of Sakamoto’s Store (And Former Member Of The Order)
- How Old Is Sakamoto: 27
- How Tall Is Sakamoto: 6’2″ (188 cm)
- Sakamoto’s Birthday: November 21
- Japanese Voice Actor: Tomokazu Sugita
- English Voice Actor: Matthew Mercer
With his name in the title (and on his store), Taro Sakamoto is, naturally, Sakamoto Days‘ protagonist, and he is arguably the best character in the manga/anime (which is never a guarantee). An extremely deadly assassin who used to be a member of the Order, Sakamoto walked away from that world when he met Aoi, a woman who instantly won his heart.
Yearning to live a simple and safe life with his wife and daughter, Taro nowadays runs a convenience store, all the while trying to keep a low profile and hoping that his former profession does not come back to haunt him. Unsurprisingly, that is exactly what happens, and Taro finds himself targeted for assassination by all sorts of colorful killers (some of whom used to be his allies). Although he does not quite look the same as he did during his Order days, Taro is still a force of nature who can overwhelm many opponents without breaking much of a sweat. That said, he is not peerless by any means.
Aoi Sakamoto
Co-Owner Of Sakamoto’s Store (And Taro’s Better Half)
- How Old Is Aoi: 26
- How Tall Is Aoi: 5’4″ (163 cm)
- Aoi’s Birthday: N/A
- Japanese Voice Actress: Nao Touyama
- English Voice Actress: Rosie Okumura
Aoi is kind of in a weird spot, at least as far as her importance goes. To be honest, she does not actually do all that much in Sakamoto Days, and she regularly disappears for episodes on end. However, she is single-handedly responsible for turning Taro’s entire existence around, teaching him the value of human life in the process.
If Sakamoto had never met Aoi, he would still be a member of the Order who spends his days coldly killing off people without hesitation. Sure, he still spends most of his days fighting assassins, but he is forced into these scenarios. Personality-wise, Aoi is strong-willed, brave, and stands her ground.
Hana Sakamoto
Taro & Aoi’s Daughter
- How Old Is Hana: 6
- How Tall Is Hana: 3’7″ (110 cm)
- Hana’s Birthday: September 26
- Japanese Voice Actor: Hina Kino
- English Voice Actor: Grace Lu
Taro and Aoi’s precious little girl, Hana is carefree and, for the most part, seems to be leading a happy life. She does not appear to know anything about her father’s extracurricular activities, which makes sense since she is only 6 years old. Ultimately, Hana is just a normal child who loves her parents.
Shin Asakura
Works At Sakamoto’s Store (And A Former JAA Hitman)
- How Old Is Shin: 20
- How Tall Is Shin: 5’8″ (172 cm)
- Shin’s Birthday: June 7
- Japanese Voice Actor: Nobunaga Shimazaki
- English Voice Actor: Dallas Liu
Showing up during the opening episode to try and kill Taro, Shin fails and, long story short, finds himself working for the person he was meant to take out. While he was part of the Japanese Association of Assassins, Shin was never cut out to be a hitman, as he is just way too nice to fully embrace that role.
That said, Shin has all the tools to be a pretty deadly assassin, including an ability to read minds that was forced upon him through experiments he suffered as a child. In terms of fighting ability, he is nowhere close to the likes of Taro, but he is a quick learner who seems to grow stronger with each passing arc.
Lu Shaotang
Works At Sakamoto’s Store (And Part Of A Triad Family)
- How Old Is Lu: 18
- How Tall Is Lu: 5’5″ (165 cm)
- Lu’s Birthday: April 8
- Japanese Voice Actress: Ayane Sakura
- English Voice Actress: Rosalie Chiang
Completing Sakamoto Days‘ central trio, Lu Shaotang is an explosion of unpredictable energy, a trait showcased during her introduction. Lu literally drops in on Taro and Shin while she is being chased by a group of men, as she owns a key that unlocks her family’s treasures. Lu is part of a Triad family, a Chinese mafia that has both riches and power (presumably anyway, as Sakamoto Days has not explored Lu’s history in significant detail). As she was born into this life and did not choose it, she took the opportunity to start a new chapter in her life and became one of Sakamoto’s employees.
Like her coworkers, Lu is all-around likable, and she has a particularly fun rapport with Shin. As a fighter, Lu is fairly capable, although she usually needs to get drunk to put up a fight against particularly strong opponents.
Heisuke Mashimo
Works At Sakamoto’s Store (And Assassin)
- How Old Is Heisuke: 21
- How Tall Is Heisuke: 5’11” (180 cm)
- Heisuke’s Birthday: December 17
- Japanese Voice Actor: Ryouta Suzuki
- English Voice Actor: Xolo Maridueña
So far, Heisuke is the last assassin to be converted into a convenience store employee in the anime, and he comes across as a supporting character compared to Shin and Lu (and, obviously, Taro). Still, he is a relatively important part of the story, appearing in most arcs to provide back-up to the heroes or to get his own brief showcases. Alongside his pet parrot, Heisuke is a mostly kind guy who excels at sharpshooting, to the point that he is among the best long-ranged assassins in Sakamoto Days.
Yoichi Nagumo
Member Of The Order (And Sakamoto’s Friend)
- How Old Is Nagumo: 27
- How Tall Is Nagumo: 6’3″ (190 cm)
- Nagumo’s Birthday: July 9
- Japanese Voice Actor: Natsuki Hanae
- English Voice Actor: Aleks Le
The Order is filled with big personalities, most of whom have (at best) cold relationships with the Sakamoto crew. The main exception is Taro’s old friend, Nagumo, who frequently shows up to provide some useful information or to actively help out. Now, to be fair, Nagumo loves to push Taro’s buttons, and he seems to really delight in scaring Shin; still, he mostly does right by his companions.
Alongside Sakamoto, Nagumo is comfortably among the manga and anime’s most beloved characters. Chaotic, charming, and an all-around playful menace, he steals pretty much every single scene. Nagumo is absurdly strong, too.
