The Murderbot Diaries:
From an awards perspective, The Murderbot Diaries is one of the most successful science fiction series of the century. It has racked up four Hugo Awards, two Nebula Awards, and three Locus Awards. Honestly, the series would probably have more wins, but Wells has declined multiple nominations for the series.

Published in 2023, Witch King won the Locus Award for Best Novel and was a finalist for both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. the second novel in The Rising World series releasing October 7, now’s a great time to catch up.
City of Bones and Wheel of the Infinite are standalone works of fantasy fiction the author wrote back in the ’90s. Wells’ debut historical fantasy novel, The Element of Fire, is collected in The Book of Ile-Rien. The Emilie Adventures, meanwhile, is a duology of steampunk novels for young adult readers.
Just like in the critically acclaimed TV series, the protagonist in The Murderbot Diaries is a SecUnit, a humanoid security construct with cloned tissue and cutting-edge mechanical components. After hacking and disabling his governor module, SecUnit becomes an autonomous being. He picks the name Murderbot, which succinctly describes his primary function as a private security construct. To avoid being destroyed for breaking free, Murderbot carries on as a planet-hopping bodyguard protects and kills for the humans who view him as an object. Murderbot copes with his miserable existence by becoming obsessed with the sci-fi soap opera he watches in his mind instead of paying attention to the missions at hand.
The Apple TV+ Murderbot adaptation starring Alexander Skarsgard holds an exceedingly impressive 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. As is often the case, however, the source material is better. The books are written from Murderbot’s perspective, so you’re viewing the events through the eyes of someone who only recently became in control of his existence. Though his perspective includes moments of levity, the strength of the character is his personal reckoning with his uncontrollable past and his search for purpose and connection in an unforgiving world.
If you’d prefer physical editions of The Murderbot Diaries, check out the paperback collections and matching hardcover editions below. The hardcover edition of Platform Decay is available to preorder for $25 at Amazon. Fans of The Rising World can preorder the hardcover edition of Queen Demon for $27 (was $30) ahead of its October 7 release.

Earlier this year, Tor released a trio of budget-friendly paperbacks. Volume 1 collects All Systems Red and Artificial Condition, the first two novellas in the series. Amazon has The Murderbot Diaries Volume 1 for $14.35 (was $20). The first two Murderbot books won the Hugo Award for Best Novella in back-to-back years. Volume 2 collects the third and fourth novellas for $20, and Volume 3 includes the standalone novella Fugitive Telemetry and System Collapse for $17 (was $23). The MSRP is slightly higher for Volume 3 because System Collapse is a full-length novel.
The potentially confusing aspect of these paperback collections is that they exclude Book 5, Network Effect. Network Effect was the first full-length Murderbot novel. At 352 pages, Network Effect is longer than two novellas on its own. If you opt for these paperbacks, you need to buy Network Effect separately, as System Collapse is a direct sequel. The paperback edition of Network Effect is $13.89 (was $20). Wells won the Hugo, Nebula, and Locus Awards for Best Novel for Network Effect.
Paperback Volumes 1-3 plus a copy of Network Effect would cost you roughly $65 right now.

All five Murderbot novellas and the two novels remain in print as standalone hardcover books, too. With the exception of All Systems Red and Network Effect, Tor hasn’t published standalone paperback editions of The Murderbot Diaries. If you want to own individual, matching copies, hardcover is your only option. But considering most are on sale for around 50% off or more, it’s certainly not a bad option. Based on today’s prices, Books 1-7 cost roughly $92 total–$27 more than the paperbacks discussed above.
