Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein Is Getting Two Premium Companion Books

Guillermo del Toro is an undisputed master of storytelling, and at long last, his adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic tale of Victor Frankenstein is now streaming on Netflix, alongside a limited US theatrical run. Fans of the films will want to check out two upcoming books that offer a deeper look into the film’s creation. The first, Frankenstein: Written and Directed by Guillermo del Toro, launches on October 28 and goes behind the scenes of the movie. This will be followed by Frankenstein: The Complete Screenplay on November 25, which is a hardcover edition of the film’s complete script that includes a selection of extra material.

Frankenstein: Written and Directed by Guillermo del Toro is a breakdown of how the movie was made, starting from the very early days of pre-production with a collection of concept art to when the film was in full production and various period-specific props were created. Movies directed by del Toro are known for having a sense of physicality and authenticity to them, and this 334-page hardcover book explores the filmmaker’s creative process through his developmental sketches of Frankenstein’s monster, set photos, exclusive storyboards, and costumes.

Frankenstein: The Complete Screenplay is a 240-page paperback volume that includes the full script for the movie presented alongside a collection of concept art, film stills, and behind-the-scenes photography. It also features anecdotes from the film’s production, giving readers insight into how del Toro adapted Shelley’s classic story for the modern age.

Mary Shelley’s original novel–which is titled Frankenstein: Or, The Modern Prometheus–was first published in 1818, yet it remains a popular book even two centuries later. If you want to read it for yourself, several new and upcoming editions of the book are available. Frankenstein – Netflix Tie-in Edition is a new paperback printing of Shelley’s novel featuring new cover art from del Toro’s film. It launches on October 28 for $18, and preorders are available at Amazon.

If you prefer a hardcover edition, there are a few options available. The most exciting is the new Frankenstein: MinaLima Edition, which also launches on October 28. The $45 premium hardcover book features all-new cover art and interior illustrations, along with seven interactive elements like a fold-out map, diary entries, and more.
