Halo: Campaign Evolved Prequel Missions Will Tell an ‘All New’ Story

Halo: Campaign Evolved Prequel Missions Will Tell an ‘All New’ Story

Halo: Campaign Evolved will feature three prequel missions not in the original game, and according to the dev team, they’ll tell a brand-new story. The Halo franchise has a considerable amount of lore to pull from, thanks to multiple games and dozens of books across its decades-long history. Still, the team behind Halo: Campaign Evolved decided to offer fans an original narrative instead of taking something from the existing canon.

Microsoft unveiled the Halo remake on October 24, and it almost immediately divided the fanbase over what it keeps and what it changes from the original. Notably, Halo: Campaign Evolved does not have PvP multiplayer, and it adds a sprint button and four-player co-op. While the campaign will tell the same story, albeit with updated motion capture and voice acting, it’s also getting some changes in the form of three original missions to add new context to the narrative.

Halo: Campaign Evolved’s Prequel Missions Will Feature New Story, Weapons, and Enemies

In a conversation with Windows Central, Creative Director Max Szlagor confirmed that the new missions will follow an “all new” story. The initial trailer revealed that Halo: Campaign Evolved’s new missions will feature Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson, but it didn’t offer many specifics on when or where they’ll take place. Many of the details remain a mystery, but Szlagor has now clarified that the prequel story “takes place in a fairly short timeline” and will not only follow a never-before-seen narrative but also introduce new weapons, enemies, and environments.

It’s unclear if the weapons, enemies, and environments in question are new to Halo as a whole or just to the original Combat Evolved. However, the story will be entirely fresh, although Game Director Greg Hermann added that the setting will be familiar to fans of the franchise. This approach is something of a break for post-Bungie-era games in the series, as many Halo games draw from books in the 343/Halo Studios era. Hermann’s comments make it sound like the prequel missions could still take some inspiration from the books, such as exploring the fall of Reach, but the specific events won’t repeat anything from existing Halo media.

The remake’s tweaks to the campaign go beyond these prequel missions. Devs have also confirmed that Halo: Campaign Evolved will fix The Library, which is often cited as the worst mission in the original game. Fans will get their chance to see how these changes play out for themselves when the game launches in 2026.
