Based on the novellas by George R.R. Martin, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms follows Dunk and his squire Egg. If fans of the show want to play as Ser Duncan the Tall, there is thankfully a way in the Grand Strategy RPG Crusader Kings 3 for those on PC. This is possible via the A Game of Thrones mod, CK3 AGOT. This total conversion mod for CK3 is easily the most popular and is worked on by a dedicated team, with more to come in the future. They have already added dragons and parts of Essos, for example.
If fans haven’t read the books or finished Season 1, then they may want to avoid playing as Ser Duncan, as his story in CK3 AGOT picks up after the Tourney at Ashford.

There are a few ways to hatch dragon eggs in CK3 AGOT, even if dragons are currently extinct.
A Required CK3 DLC To Play As Ser Duncan The Tall
Usually in Crusader Kings 3, players take control of a realm, playing as a count, duke, or king, for example. However, with the Roads to Power DLC, it’s possible to play as a Landless Adventurer who roams the map. This CK3 DLC is therefore necessary to play as Dunk.
For those who don’t want to buy the DLC, there are many other great CK3 AGOT starts, with players able to play as Ned Stark, Rhaenyra Targaryen, or Robert Baratheon, for example. There are even dragons in other bookmarks.
Other DLCs For The Best Experience As Dunk
While no other DLCs are required, there are a few that will make adventures with Dunk more fun.
- Tours & Tournaments: Tourneys are central to Dunk’s story, so this DLC is heavily recommended.
- Wandering Nobles: An event pack centered around traveling, which is common for Dunk.
- Wards & Wardens: An event pack about childhood and education, which is fitting with Egg as Dunk’s ward.

With the dragon update out, many players are wondering how to become a Dragonrider in CK3 AGOT, and there are thankfully a number of ways.
How To Get The CK3 AGOT Mod
First of all, mods for Crusader Kings 3 are only available to those on PC. However, they are also incredibly easy to download and manage on Steam, thanks to the Steam Workshop.
Steam Workshop
As long as players are signed into Steam and own CK3, they can click the green Subscribe button on this page. This will automatically download the mod without having to mess around with any files.
When the mod is updated, Steam will automatically download the update, meaning there is no messing around.
Crusader Kings 3 Mod Loader
After subscribing to the mod, load CK3, which will open the launcher. Before clicking play, click on Playsets on the left. Create a new playset, and then add a mod to it and select A Game of Thrones.
Then, on the menu on the left, click Home, and under the play button in the middle, there is a dropdown menu to select Playsets. Select the one you just made and press play.

Dragons in CK3 AGOT come in many different varieties, with the best of them being much stronger than others.
How To Play As Ser Duncan The Tall In CK3
It usually takes a good few minutes for the CK3 AGOT mod to load, so don’t panic that it’s not working. When it’s ready, start a new game.
The following bookmark has spoilers about the events and ending of Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
At the top, select the Black Dragon tab and then the Shadows of Ashford bookmark. This start date takes place in the year 209 AC, immediately after the events of the Tourney at Ashford Meadow. In other words, this picks up from where Season 1 of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms finishes, as well as The Hedge Knight, the first of the Dunk & Egg novellas.
Fans may notice a few familiar faces to choose from, such as Prince Maekar, but Ser Duncan the Tall should also be there. Click on him and then start the game.
Playing As Ser Duncan & A Landless Adventurer
Players can take Dunk & Egg wherever they like. One option is to continue the journey they followed in the next two books, but they could go anywhere in Westeros and to the available places in Essos.
A Martial Lifestyle is likely best, and players can choose a patron god. They can recruit others to their adventurer’s camp, attend tournaments, fight in wars as mercenaries, expand the camp, work on contracts for lords, and much more.

A Later Start Date – After The Spring
Another option is the After the Spring bookmark, which takes place two years later during the events of The Sworn Sword novella, and hopefully, a second season of the HBO show.
Dunk is playable in this bookmark too, with some scripted events including Lady Rohanne Webber and Ser Eustace Osgrey.
Egg himself is also playable in later start dates when he is an adult, but this once again goes into spoiler territory.
