How does combat work in The Legend of Heroes Trails Beyond the Horizon

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon is now available worldwide, and mastering the combat system should be high on your agenda.

Like previous chapters in the saga, you’ll be relying on turn-based combat. However, a real-time system is also available, and you can mix the two to get an edge over your enemies.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon Field Battle explained

The Field Battle is the real-time mechanic that allows you to use different abilities. The more abilities you unlock, the more choices you can enjoy during a battle. You can also dodge incoming attacks, and there won’t be any restrictions on your movement.

This method is ideal against weaker enemies or swarms.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon Command Battle explained

This is the classic turn-based method that will be applicable when you’re facing bigger enemies or bosses. While you can still move around, the scope is relatively low. You can activate this mode using the R button (or X/Square on your controller).

In this method, you have to line up your spells for them to do damage. While I love the Command Battle system, it will take a longer time to master. You’ll also have to anticipate the enemy’s movements to do maximum damage.

Irrespective of your chosen method, all spells and abilities will consume CP, so try not spam the heavy damage options repeatedly.

All The Legend of Heroes: Trails Beyond the Horizon battle mechanics

There are different mechanics you have to understand in combat (irrespective of which system you’re using).

  • Charged Attack: Only usable during Field Battle, it’s a strong alternate attack that deals plenty of damage. You have to land basic attacks to fill the meter that determines when you can do a Charged Attack.
  • Quick Arts: Only usable during Field battle, you can do damage with these simple moves.
  • S-Crafts: Powerful Ultimates that can only be used in Command Battles.
  • Shard Boost: Support moves that allow you to buff your allies. Can be used in Command Battles.
  • Shard Command: Passive buffs that are automatically active during Command Battle mode.
  • ZOC: Allows you to slow time during which your damage will increase during the duration of the move.
