JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution is a compilation film that montages its way through the Shibuya arc to provide context for season 3, which will cover the Itadori Extermination arc. This story directly follows Shibuya and gives insight into Yuji Itadori’s mental state after destroying the city as Sukuna controlled his body. Although most don’t need yet another recap of season 2 material, some viewers may still be confused as to why Yuta Okkotsu, the protagonist of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, is now out to kill Yuj in the film. Once people find that out, however, they may be confused by the sudden mood shift in the ending. We’re here to make sense of it all, including why Yuta is looking like a villain, if he was able to accomplish this, and what it all means for the future of season 3.
[Ed note: Spoilers ahead for the ending of JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution.]
JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution’s ending, explained
After a 45-minute recap of Shibuya, JuJutsu Kaisen: Execution transitions to the first two episodes of season 3, which are set to premiere on Jan. 8. We see Yuji looking ultra-depressed about wrecking the city as he does cleanup duty with Choso. Suddenly, they are attacked by two JuJutsu sorcerers: Yuja and Naoya Zenin (kin to Megumi Fushiguro). Although the latter is there for more selfish purposes, Yuta needs to fulfill the wishes of the JuJutsu Council, which wants to see Yuji dead after the Shibuya incident.
Choso takes care of Naoya, while Yuji tries to escape from Yuta. However, Yuta moves menacingly as he stalks Yuji. Despite all we’ve seen Yuji do while possessed by Sukuna and all the growth he’s had by himself, Yuta still subdues him with little to no effort.
Yuta succeeds in stabbing Yuji in his heart, effectively killing him on the spot. However, this was all a ruse to make it appear that Yuji died so he could draw attention away from the manhunt that’s been put out on him by the Council (and those who want revenge for all the murders in Shibuya). Yuta informs Yuji that their shared sensei, Satoru Gojo, contacted him before the events in Shibuya to look after Yuji. Now that Gojo is sealed away and can no longer protect Yuta from the council (who’ve wanted Yuji dead since episode 2), Yuji stepped in to keep his word. Yuta can use his cursed energy to heal. And since Yuji has Sukuna’s toughness, Yuta can use this ability to bring Yuji back to life.
What’s next in JuJutsu Kaisen season 3?
So Yuta was acting like a villain to make the ruse look convincing. Now the two seem to have enlisted themselves in the Culling Games, a cruel tournament that pits Sorcerers and non-Sorcerers alike into a battle to the death. For what purposes? Well, you’ll just have to watch season 3 to find out. If you want to be a Yuta professional just like us, watch JJK: 0 and these episodes to catch up.
