Persona 5 Royal has upgraded Palaces and added new phases to boss fights first seen in the original Persona 5 release. Notably, Kunikazu Okumura of the fifth Palace has gained a difficulty spike that can make him extremely frustrating for some to defeat. What’s worse is he’s the first (but thankfully last) boss fight to have a timer counting down. So if you can’t defeat him within 30 minutes, you’ll get an instant game over.
Thankfully, there are a few different ways to make the Okumura boss battle easier in Persona 5 Royal, which we’ve detailed below. From the best teams, to Persona skills, to items, confidants, and weaknesses, here’s how to beat Okumura in Persona 5 Royal.
Persona 5 Royal Gift Guide (Best P5R Gifts)
A complete Persona 5 gift guide detailing the best P5R gifts for every confidant in the game.
Updated on December 27, 2025 by Jessica Orr: Okumura is still causing frustration amongst Persona 5 Royal players today, thanks to his annoying 30 minute timer, and waves of robots with different weaknesses. To make the fight less annoying, and up your chances of beating Okumura on your first few tries, we’ve added even more tips on how to succeed below. Including offensive items you can use, another Confidant you can rank for an easier time, and more tips on what to do when preparing for the battle, and during the fight.
How to Prepare for Okumura in Persona 5 Royal
The best way to fight Okumura is to be around level 44 before sending the calling card, and prepare a team and item set up in advance. Since Okumura’s boss fight relies heavily on him buffing his robots, you’ll want to bring someone that can cast Dekaja. This is a non-damaging spell that removes buffs cast on enemies. Ann Takamaki/Panther learns this spell at level 16, so she’s a good pick for your team against Okumura. Another useful skill to learn is Dekunda, which gets rid of debuffs for all allies.
Don’t worry if you erased Dekaja, as Ann can relearn it by going to the Confessional in Kanda.
If Panther’s level is too low, or if you simply don’t want to use her, then you can also get Dekaja from the following Personas:
|
Persona |
Level Dekaja is Learned |
|---|---|
|
Sarasvati |

|
Orobas |
Already has upon fusion |
|
Raphael |
Already has upon fusion |

|
Succubus |

|
Obariyon |

Alternatively, you can get Dekaja as a Skill Card by putting Mokoi in the Electric Chair during a Fusion Alarm. This way, any one of Joker’s Personas can learn Dekaja.
Recommended Team
The recommended team to beat Okumura with in Persona 5 Royal is:
- Panther (for Dekaja)
- Noir (for Mapsio and Amrita Drop)
- Morgana or Queen (for Mediarama, Magaru, and Rakukaja/Masukukaja)
Depending on Joker’s Personas, this lineup can be changed and swapped around, but having at least Morgana and Noir in your team is recommended. If you are bringing Noir (AKA Haru), we highly recommend you play darts with Haru at the Penguin Sniper Lounge in Kichijoji to improve her Baton Pass ability. This will give you a significant boost when fighting Okumura.
Team Skills
The next thing you’ll want to check for is that each teammate has a Ma- Skill. These are Affinity Abilities (eg. Frei, Psio, Agi) that will hit all enemies. At this point in the game, each Phantom Thief should have learned at least one of their respective Ma- Spell.
You should also have a Phantom Thief that can buff the team with either Accuracy/Evasion or Defense. Yusuke learns Masukukaja (Accuracy/Evasion buff on party for 3 turns) at level 49, while Queen/Makoto’s Persona, Johanna, learns Marakukaja (Defense buff on party for 3 turns) at level 48. But if these characters only have Sukukaja and Rakukaja, then you should just cast it on the Phantom Thief that Okumura targets.
Milady, Haru/Noir’s Persona, will have Amrita Drop when she first joins, and you’ll want to keep this because it is a spell that gets rid of all ailments for the party. Amrita Drop is very useful, because Okumura inflicts the Hunger Ailment on the entire team.

Confidants
Although not required to beat Okumura, to make the fight way easier, it’s best to have Hifumi’s (Star) Confidant at Rank 10 for the Togo System Ability. This allows you to swap out current party members with backup party members on anyone’s turn. This will save having to cycle back to Joker just to swap out.
Also, having Maruki’s (Councillor) Confidant at Rank 2 gives Joker the Detox X ability, which sometimes cures any status ailment that he receives. Note that this will only work for Joker and not any of the other Phantom Thieves. However, if Joker gets afflicted with Hunger during the boss fight, Detox X may kick in and save a turn.
Again, although not necessary to beat Okumura, the fight will be a lot easier if you’ve been ranking up the Strength Confidant (Caroline and Justine), as you’ll be able to Fuse some very strong Personas with Psy and Curse Skills.
Persona 5 Royal: A Step By Step Guide To Fusion
Persona 5 Royal is a fantastic RPG, and many players should know the steps necessary to start the Fusion process between themselves and allies.
Okumura Boss Walkthrough in Persona 5 Royal
Okumura’s battle has a timer of 30 minutes. Since there’s quite a bit of talking during this boss fight, you’ll want to hold down the Triangle/Y button to skip through all dialogue.
In order to defeat Okumura, you need to take out all robots at the same time. If one robot is left standing after three of its allies are defeated, it will run off. This causes Okumura to summon the exact same line of bots and you’ll have to start over again. Okumura will sometimes order one robot to self-destruct, and if a robot self-destructs, it does NOT count as a “defeat,” meaning the cycle will restart.
The Phantom Thieves won’t be able to perform an All-Out Attack on Okumura’s robots, even if they’re downed. However, you can still use the Baton Pass.
First Wave
At the start of the battle, Okumura will summon a line of level 43 MDL-WKR Corporobos. He will then randomly select a Phantom Thief for his bots to attack during their turns. This will change when Okumura brings in a new wave of Corporobos.
In any case, these MDL-WKRs all have a weakness to Fire and Wind while resisting everything else except Gun damage. To combat this, you should use Panther’s Maragi or Morgana’s Magaru.
Make sure you end your Baton Pass on your strongest character, or the character who’s going to cause the most damage to each wave of robots, to ensure you’re dealing as much damage as possible while chaining Ma- Skills during your Baton Passes.
Second Wave
Once WKRs are taken out, Okumura will summon Cognitive Haru to assist him. Cognitive Haru lets Okumura move twice in a row, allowing him to debuff your team and then buff his robots.
Okumura’s next wave is Corporobos MDL-CH, which has an Affinity weakness to Ice and Psy. First, you should get rid of the Defense buff with Dekaja (or Baptismal Water). Next, you’ll want to use Haru’s Mapsio to Down the enemies and then proceed to take them out as quickly as possible.
Third Wave
The third wave is full of MDL-AM robots, which resist everything except Gun, Electricity, and Nuke. You should use Makoto’s Mafrei or Ryuji’s Mazio to take care of these bots. Alternatively, you can use Haru’s Triple Down, which deals 1-3 Gun Damage on all enemies.
You should get into the habit of using Dekaja (or Baptismal Water) to buff skills, so that all of the robots take equal damage.
Fourth Wave
The fourth wave is made up of MDL-DM robots, which again resist everything except Gun, Wind, and Bless. They have a Weakness to Wind and Bless, so Morgana’s Magaru is very effective. If Joker has a Persona that can use Bless skills, you should feel free to bring it out to help.
Fifth Wave
The fifth wave consists of MDL-GM. They resist all Affinities and physical hits (sans Gun) and are weak to Psy and Curse. So use your strongest Psy and Curse skills, or items like Godly Magatama, Psy-Wheel, and Five-inch Nail to deal Psy and Curse damage.
Sixth Wave
Okumura will send out MDL-ED. There’s no easy way to Down this guy, but, fortunately, he doesn’t have any resistances, so you can really go to town with your strongest moves here. If your team is low on SP, you should restore it with SP items like Leblanc Coffee, or swap affected party members out for someone in the back row.
At this point, no further enemies have Affinity Weaknesses, so there’s no need to worry about keeping specific teammates on the front lines.
When MDL-ED uses Big Bang Order, the best strategy is to Block. His next move, Big Bang Challenge will deal heavy Almighty damage with a 2.5x increase and inflict Hunger on everyone it hits. In the case that someone is already afflicted with Hunger, the Big Bang Challenge will “cure” the Hunger ailment.
Final Wave
After MDL-ED is defeated, Okumura will send out Cognitive Haru. Luckily, Cognitive Haru is pretty weak, but she does use Selfless Devotion when she’s at low health. This destroys Cognitive Haru, but deals heavy Almighty damage to the party. The best bet here is to Block when Okumura gives the order for Cognitive Haru to sacrifice herself, as if Joker is knocked out, it’s an instant game over, even if his teammates are still standing.
When all his robots are destroyed, Okumura will be left alone. His defense is pathetic, so it only takes one or two hits to take him down. After he’s been defeated, you can enjoy a well-deserved cutscene and then Save the game.
You should be sure to keep an eye on the timer. If the timer’s at 5-10 minutes and the Phantom Thieves still haven’t fought MDL-ED on the sixth wave, then it’s probably best to restart the battle.
