Pale Oil is an extremely important item in Hollow Knight: Silksong as it’s used to upgrade your needle.
After you complete the “The Threadspun Town” quest, you’ll meet Pinmaster Plinney in Bellhart. They’ll upgrade your needle for free once, but every subsequent upgrade requires a Pale Oil. Anything that increases your damage output is valuable in Silksong as everything deals a ton of damage, so, of course, Pale Oils won’t be the easiest thing to find.

Pale Oil locations in Hollow Knight: Silksong
We’ve found two Pale Oils so far in Hollow Knight: Silksong. They can be found in the following areas:
- Inside a locked room in a needle shop in Choral Chambers
- Reward for completing the “Great Taste of Pharloom” quest in Choral Chambers

Pale Oil #1
The first Pale Oil is found in a needle shop near the center of Choral Chambers, but it’s on the second level of the shop that just so happens to be blocked off.
To get the Pale Oil, you’re going to need to do the following:
- Defeat the Cogwork Dancers and drop into any of the holes.
- Platform your way through the U-shaped Cogwork Core and out of an exit about halfway up the right wall.
- Defeat the gauntlet of bugs and enter the Whispering Vaults.
- Enter the room above the exit with a sign featuring three heads on the left wall.
- Continue into the room on the left.
In this room, you’ll encounter a puzzle where you need to move wooden blocks to create a path for yourself. Imagine those mobile games where you need to free the car from its parking space, except you are the car.
When you enter the room, follow these steps:
- Hit the left most wall, which is actually a box in disguise.
- Jump up the wall and hit the box to the right.
- Drop down and hit the box on the floor to the right.
- Use the box on the floor as a platform and wall climb up the boxes above.
- Hit the box directly above you and climb up the wall on the right to the top of the boxes.
- Hit the box to the left and stand beside the box.
- Hit the box directly below you and drop down.
- Hit the box to the left, move over, and hit the box upwards to find a lever.
Activating the lever will take you to the room with the Pale Oil in the Choral Chambers.
Pale Oil #2
The second Pale Oil is rewarded to you after you complete the “Great Taste of Pharloom” quest in Choral Chambers.
To start the quest, you’ll need to interact with Loyal Mergwin in the dining area of Choral Chambers. This quest starts out as a gathering quest, where you need to collect five ingredients:
- Mossberry Stew
- Vintage Nectar
- Courier’s Rasher
- Crustnut
- Pickled Muckmaggot
These ingredients are spread across the entirety of Pharloom, and some of them will require you to complete other quests to collect them. After you collect them all, you need to deliver the ingredients back Mergwin in a specific amount of time. If you get hit at all during your delivery, your time will decrease. So, you’ll need to do a speedy delivery without getting hit to complete the quest and receive another Pale Oil.
