Hell Is Us’ gameplay is primarily made up of exploring the world, solving puzzles, and taking on the creepy creatures that roam the world. While the combat can be challenging, you can make things easier by upgrading your weapons and defensive gear. One way to do that is to use Shards to increase your weapon’s grade. The higher your weapon’s grade, the more you can level it up from using it, increasing the damage dealt per hit of your combo, and its Lymbic Energy capacity. Shards come in different sizes and types, however, and those required to reach the higher weapon grades in Hell Is Us are more difficult to get than others.
In this guide, I’ll explain how to naturally obtain all shard sizes and types, as well as how you can use Victor to get the ones you want.
How to Get All Shard Sizes in Hell Is Us
Shards come in three different sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. The size of the shard you get is determined by the level of the enemy you defeat. Level 1 enemies drop small shards, level 2 drop medium shards, and level 3 drop large shards. The amount of shards dropped varies on the type of enemy you encounter, with the more powerful ones dropping more, and your standard humanoid-looking ones only dropping a few.
You can quickly check what level an enemy is by locking onto it (R3/ RS) and looking for the number next to its health bar. I’ve highlighted this in the screenshot below.
How to Get All Shard Types in Hell Is Us
Alongside each size of shard, there are then different colors or ‘types’ of shard based on the different Lymbic energies you’ll encounter in Hell Is Us. These are:
- Neutral – White
- Rage – Red
- Terror – Green
- Grief – Blue
- Ecstasy – Yellow
As you progress through the game, you’ll encounter enemies who release a Lymbic energy entity from them that you need to defeat first before you can defeat the white colored creature. I’ve provided an example of a Grief Lymbic energy entity in the screenshot below.
When you defeat an enemy imbued with Lymbic energy, they’ll drop shards corresponding with that Lymbic energy. For example, the enemies in the screenshot above dropped Large Grief Shards because they were a level three grief-type enemy.
As such, to get each type of shard in Hell Is Us, you simply need to defeat enemies corresponding to the type of shard you need.
The enemy type can be easily identified by the color on their chest before engaging them in combat. If they have no color, they’re a normal enemy and will drop Neutral shards.
Infusing Shards with Victor in Hell Is Us
Victor, the Blacksmith in Jova can also use his ‘Infuse Shards’ mechanic to create Rage, Ecstasy, Terror, and Grief shards if you’re running short and desperately need to upgrade a weapon or defensive gear.
To do this, select the ‘Infuse Shards’ option from his ‘Craft’ menu. Here, you can choose to create any type and size of shard. Regardless of type of Shard you want to create, you will need three Neutral shards of that size. For example, if you want a large Terror shard, you will need three large Neutral shards.
