At the start of the game, after Hornet drops from the bridge into the Moss Grotto, Silksong players are not given a map. To get a map and start charting your journey through Pharloom, you must save up Rosaries and purchase your first map from an NPC in The Marrow.
Like in Hollow Knight, this vendor also sells items that will help Hornet track her exploration, like the Compass, Quill, and various Map Markers. This guide explains how to get a map in Silksong and what other items you can get to start mapping out the world of Pharloom.
Where To Get A Map in Silksong
To get a map, Silksong players must get to The Marrow, the second major area of the game.
- From Moss Grotto, defeat the Moss Mother to get to Bone Bottom, then go right until you reach Sharma and a large Bone Gate.
- Go above and around the Bone Gate to open it from the other side, then continue right.
- In the next room, platform to the top-right, then go up and left until you reach a chasm. You should pass the Flea Caravan. Go to the top-left of this room, then continue left.
- In the next room, jump across the bells and continue left until you hear the sound of someone singing. Here, you will meet Shakra for the first time.
After this warrior-cartographer introduces herself, she will offer a selection of wares in exchange for Rosaries – including the first map Silksong players can get. The map of the Mosslands costs 40 Rosaries, while the map of the Marrow costs 50.
If you are low on Rosaries, explore the immediate area to find a couple of Rosary caches and enemies, which will drop Rosaries on defeat. There is a secret room above the Flea Caravan with 24 Rosaries, too.
Purchase either of these maps, and you will gain the ability to open your map with the left bumper. You will also unlock the Map tab of the status menu, which displays the full map of your explored areas of Pharloom instead of just the current area.
Shakra sells other goods that are useful for map-making, including a Compass, Quill, and Map Markers. These are worth acquiring early on to figure out where you are on the map, and to update your map with explored locations.
- The Compass is a yellow Tool that will show your location on the map, but only while equipped.
- The Quill is a passive item that allows Hornet to update her map with details on visited locations whenever she sits at a bench.
- Bench Pins will mark any discovered Benches on your map with a unique pin
- Shell Markers can be placed anywhere on your map to indicate custom locations, like the location of an obstacle you plan to return to later.
Where To Get More Maps In Silksong
At the start of the game, Shakra will be your primary means of acquiring maps of new areas, but she is not the only source of maps in Silksong. For example, at the start of Act 2, Hornet can discover the map to a new area on a signpost.
Keep an eye out for all key items in the environment as you explore uncharted zones, and listen for Shakra’s singing, to find maps in Silksong.
