We all kind of expected it, but it was still nice to actually see it in the end. During Nintendo’s Switch 2-focused Direct presentation, we got a look at some of the games coming to the console, including a brand new game in the Legend of Zelda IP, titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment It’s not quite a mainline entry; instead, it’s another Warriors-style game developed in collaboration with Omega Force.
The trailer itself showed off the classic Warriors-style gameplay we all know and love.
The Legend of Zelda series evolved in a big way back in 2017, when Breath of the Wild launched alongside the original Nintendo Switch. It took the series in a brand new direction, featuring a large sandbox open-world that players could explore however they wish. While there is a main story (complete with major dungeons) to follow, Breath of the Wild is very non-linear in nature, allowing players to jump straight to the final boss if they wish, or just faff around as much as they want.
Tears of the Kingdom served as a direct follow-up to Breath of the Wild, and was released for the Switch back in 2023. While the game didn’t necessarily break new ground, it did refine the groundwork that was already laid out in Breath of the Wild. Link’s powers were streamlined and improved a little, with the Ultra Hand ability giving players even more freedom in how they could interact with the open-world. It certainly didn’t hurt that Tears of the Kingdom’s open-world was also way larger than in its predecessor, including a whole underground region that you can explore. It’s also utterly terrifying, so make sure you bring some light sources with you if you haven’t gone down there already.
Anyway, while Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment might not be the big TOTK follow-up fans may have been hoping for, it’s still going to have a tie-in to the mainline story and that’ll be exciting to see.
