It certainly looks like a GTA-flavored action game, at least.

Grand Theft Auto 6, you are so close, yet so far away. 364 days as of today, exactly. And so that means there’s a lot of gaming time to fill between now and then.

If you’re a fan of games like GTA, and who isn’t, then we may have a sleeper hit on our hands coming out in just a few weeks. The game is called MindsEye, and it’s from the new studio founded by former Rockstar Games president and GTA 5 producer Leslie Benzies.

In a new video released today by the game’s dev studio, Build a Rocket Boy, the game lays it all out to explain exactly what it is: a third-person, open-world action game in the same vein as GTA and Red Dead Redemption, but with a near-future twist.

MindsEye is set in a fictional desert city named Redrock, and it features just about everything you’d expect from a game like GTA. There’s lots of driving and shooting action as you play as a character named Jacob, “in a world where AI, hi-tech experimentation and unchecked military power shapes every encounter.” Doesn’t sound too far from the truth nowadays.

As part of today’s new trailer, MindsEye’s 2025 roadmap was unveiled, teasing lots of upcoming content updates and different game modes like a Horde mode, car races, combat missions, drone races, and more, with future plans for collabs, new missions, and even multiplayer some time in the fall.

I could see this game performing very well with gamers looking to scratch their GTA itch while waiting for GTA 6, and it’s one I’ve had my eye on for a while. I’m hoping for the best for it, and it’s one I will continue to watch and play while dreaming of a new, popular game that evokes the feelings of GTA and GTA Online.

At the same time, it could also fall flat on its face trying to do what Rockstar Games is best at, without forming its own identity. Time will tell, and it’s only a few short weeks away from launching, so it’s a title that gamers may need to keep on their radar.

MindsEye launches on PC (Steam and Epic Games Store), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on June 10.
