Is the Boruto Manga Setting Us Up for a Tragic Ending?

This article contains spoilers for the Boruto manga.

Summary

  • Boruto: Two Blue Vortex may have a tragic ending with major character deaths, leaving fans in tears.
  • The age of shinobi appears to be over in Konoha, setting the stage for a catastrophic event.
  • Boruto may face a tragic fate, losing everything important to him, potentially culminating in his death.

The ending of the Boruto: Naruto Next Generations manga left many fans speechless after Kawaki and Boruto switched places while Naruto remained sealed in what seems like a pocket dimension. No wonder many fans are now speculating whether Boruto: Two Blue Vortex will suffer the same unfortunate ending, considering the current direction of Kishimoto and Ikemoto’s manga series.

As of Boruto: Two Blue Vortex chapter 22, Naruto and Sasuke are out of commission, seemingly allowing the next generation, like Boruto, Sarada, and Kawaki, to stand out. While some fans are thrilled about the latest power-ups like the Ohirume and the Rasengan Uzuhiko, many fans can’t wait to see the original Naruto characters return and wreak havoc against the enemies again.

Naruto Uzumaki has huge death flags in Boruto. Here’s why.

Could Boruto Be Headed for a Tragic Ending?

There Are Major Character Death Flags

For an anime and manga series to have a tragic ending, one of the most important ingredients is to have a major character death that would leave fans bawling for a week, breaking the internet in the process. Given Boruto’s looming death flags, it seems like fans should prepare as early as now for an unexpected ending that would make them cry for weeks.

From the very beginning of Boruto, the prologue seemingly suggests that something unfortunate has happened to the legendary Naruto Uzumaki. It’s still unclear whether he will die in the future, but many fans are worried he will be the sacrificial pawn, alongside his rival Sasuke Uchiha, to save the world. After all, in most shounen series, it’s common for impactful characters like Naruto and Sasuke to sacrifice their lives for the greater good.

“I’ll send you where I sent the Seventh Hokage, Boruto”—Kawaki

Besides, Naruto remains sealed, while Sasuke unfortunately turns into a tree. Despite the power they hold, their lives are still at stake, and it’s up to the next generation of ninja to save them. In addition, other major characters could also suffer the same fate, like Kakashi and Tsunade, who have yet to appear in the manga. Worse, there might be character deaths emerging from the next generation, possibly Sarada, Boruto, Kawaki, or even Himawari, sooner or later.

Konoha’s Looming Destruction

Is the Age of Shinobi Truly Over?

Time and again, the Hidden Leaf Village survived countless attacks from cosmic-level threats. Due to the leadership of the generations of Hokage and the sacrifice of many Leaf shinobi, Konoha continues to thrive and prosper with its citizens. However, in the prologue of the Boruto series, it’s hauntingly clear that Konoha will face a major catastrophe, so devastating that Kawaki had the confidence to declare that the age of shinobi is now over.

If fans take Kawaki’s words literally, it possibly means Boruto may be the only one left with a fighting chance to make a difference. The fate of the world would rest on Boruto, not on Naruto and Sasuke’s hands anymore. But what about the rest of the Leaf ninja and even those who come from other hidden villages? It’s possible that an entirely new villain, likely an Otsutsuki God or maybe Kawaki himself, will push everyone into a corner until only one of them is left.

“The age of shinobi is over”—Kawaki

After all, Momoshiki is clear in his prophecy that Boruto’s blue eyes will eventually take everything away from him. Perhaps the current events of the manga are just the beginning of Boruto’s misfortunes, and there’s more to come that would test his strength, including his faith.

Boruto’s Alleged Tragic Fate

The Meaning of Momoshiki’s Prophecy

As mentioned, Momoshiki told Boruto that he would lose everything important to him someday. True enough, he lost his identity to Kawaki, in addition to losing his family and the rest of Konoha except for a select few due to Eida’s omnipotence. As the plot unfolds, it seems like Boruto will continue losing these precious things as long as Momoshiki resides within him while many other powerful enemies with evil intentions emerge.

As a result, fans are expecting Boruto to lose his life, establishing a tragic ending for his own series. He may die fighting against a god-level Otsutsuki in the future or even from fighting against Kawaki in their final showdown, sacrificing his life in the process. The Boruto manga killed him once, so there’s always the possibility he might be killed off in the end as well.

“Boruto’s done for. Without a doubt.”—Kashin Koji

For now, all of these remain speculations as the Boruto manga continues to release new chapters. Fans will have to wait for more updates to find out whether Boruto will have a tragic or less devastating ending. Given the current direction of the series, it’s best for fans to remain seated as Boruto carves his own story that’s completely different from his father’s. The question is, will he have the same satisfying ending as Naruto? We hope so.
