3D Dot Game Heroes

A Voxel To The Past

3D Dot Game Heroes is an unsung gem from the PS3 era, having never left the platform in any capacity. It’s an homage to the original Zelda game on the NES, but reimagined as a 3D voxel game. Players can choose a preset avatar, or they can make their own if they are crafty enough to make Cloud from Final Fantasy 7 or, more appropriately, Link from the Zelda series.

Players quest around the overworld, take on tasks, and dive into challenging dungeons filled with monsters. Besides the cool visuals and avatar creation, 3D Dot Game Heroes is known for its absurdly giant swords that can cover entire screens at full health. Part homage, part parody, 3D Dot Game Heroes would get a lot more love if it were ported to any other platform.

Nowhere To Hide

Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots was released in 2008, and after almost two decades, it is finally leaving the PS3 in August via Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2. That said, August is a long way away, and the collection may change some things or even get canceled before launch. That’s why it’s still a good idea to keep MGS4 loaded on the PS3 to see Solid Snake’s final game.

Unlike a lot of Metal Gear games, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is more linear than most entries because there are quite a few locations to change up the gameplay. While things are more open in the opening desert town, they become more structured in later areas. The series’ iconic blend of action, stealth gameplay, and over-the-top set pieces is not lost, though, as Hideo Kojima gave this one his all as if it were going to be his last.

LittleBigPlanet 2

Stitched Together

Strangely, no PS3 LittleBigPlanet games exist to stream on PlayStation Plus, although it would admittedly be harder to create levels over shoddy streaming networks, which may be one reason why. Regardless of why, LittleBigPlanet 2 is still a great 2D platformer that players can enjoy alone or with friends in four-player co-op, so long as someone still has a PS3. With tons of costumes and accessories, each player can make their Sackboy their own.

Media Molecule topped itself over the original with more imaginative levels and a greater list of creative tools for players to make nearly any type of game they want, from RPGs to racers. The community, unfortunately, is no longer around, as servers have shut down, but even without the level creator, LittleBigPlanet 2 is fun as a strict 2D platformer. Even though it isn’t as widely known as a Mario game, LittleBigPlanet 2 can still offer a great challenge for a party setting.

Killzone 2 was promoted as a “Halo Killer” back in the day, and while it did not usurp the Halo games on the Xbox 360, or even look as good as the initial teaser trailer, it still turned out to be a cool shooter. The iconic headgear of the Helghast soldiers still haunts fans to this day, and unlike many first-person shooters of this era, the gameplay was very weighty.

The hero moved like a tank, but in turn, they also had steady aim like a well-oiled machine. The color palette is mixed with a lot of blacks and browns, but Killzone 2 makes up for the drab color scheme with an exciting campaign full of bombastic moments. As a first-party series, it’s also strange that no Killzone game from the PS3 era is available to stream on PlayStation Plus.

One Last Hurrah

Twisted Metal was a reboot released in 2012 that gave players more freedom than past entries. The core gameplay remained the same: players could select characters to go out and fight in car combat arenas. The big difference this time was that there was also a lot more on-the-ground combat with human characters, too.

While not praised as the best Twisted Metal game in the series, it was a nice return after some years of absence, which unfortunately did not earn any more sequels. The only thing close now is the TV show on Peacock, which is honestly a good video game adaptation. The online servers are shut down, but Twisted Metal is still fun alone.

Folklore

An Irish Action RPG

Folklore is a completely forgotten action RPG that never received a port or sequel on the PS3. Players control two different characters, each with the power to capture and summon creatures. They could assign these creatures to the face buttons to attack enemies in real-time combat, almost like a cross between Pokemon and a darker, fairy tale-infused game like The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.

Sony has published a lot of games over the decades, but these are the very first games they ever developed internally.

The Celtic lore inspirations for the monster designs and world helped Folklore stand out, and the combat, while not extraordinary, was satisfying to control. It’s one of the more obscure action RPGs on the PS3, and if given the chance, picking this one up in the wild is recommended. The developer, Game Republic, was not appreciated enough in their brief window of making games, with Folklore being one of their best.

Katamari Forever

Keep Rollin’, Rollin’, Rollin’

Katamari Forever is one of the coolest entries in the series, and it’s unbelievable that it is trapped on the PS3. Like all Katamari games, players will start as the Prince of the Cosmos, or one of the many cousins, and will go around to different landscapes and roll up objects. Instead of creating stars as the sole focus, this time, players will have to roll up objects to bring color back to the environments.

The color palette is a bit more faded, and the cel-shaded art style is lighter by design, making Katamari Forever stand out even more. The art style is distinct, the music is great, and the gameplay, while challenging to control at first, is easy to get used to. Hopefully, this oddity eventually gets the remaster treatment someday, as other Katamari games have.
