Jack Black has found a surprising acting niche over the past decade. Starring in A Minecraft Movie, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and a modern take on Jumanji — oh, and Borderlands — Black has become the go-to guy if you want to adapt your video game into a movie. With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie now in theaters, a third Jumanji entry coming this Christmas, and a Minecraft movie sequel in the works, Black shows no signs of slowing down in his particular lane.
So what does Jack Black want to do next, specifically when it comes to future video game movie work? Well, he wouldn’t say no to getting a role in a Red Dead Redemption adaptation, he told Polygon.
Speaking with Black during a press event for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, I asked Black where he wants to go next in his video game movie career arc.
“It’s no secret that I love Red Dead Redemption and Red Dead Redemption 2,” Black said, “but I think those guys are on record — the Houser brothers — as having zero interest in turning any of their games into movies. Which is a shame, because of all the video games out there, theirs are the most cinematic. It would be, like, too easy to make them into great movies. But yeah, that’s where I’d like to party if they ever wanna party with me.”
Added Black, “Hey Housers? Dan, Sam, I’m waiting for your call.”
While Dan Houser is no longer with Rockstar Games, the company he co-founded with brother Sam, Terry Donovan, Gary Foreman, and Jamie King in 1998, maybe Sam Houser will be open to the suggestion, once he gets Grand Theft Auto 6 out the door. But Black has another Red Dead role in mind, should Red Dead Redemption: The Motion Picture never come to pass.
“Red Dead Redemption 2 takes place around the turn of the century, right?” Black said, “There was a character around that time named Jack Black, who wrote an autobiography called You Can’t Win. I would kinda like to play Jack Black in Red Dead Redemption 3.”
While Rockstar hasn’t announced plans for a third Red Dead Redemption game, it never hurts to ask, as Black’s The Super Mario Galaxy Movie costar Donald Glover can attest. In fact, we have a Jack Black ask of our own: Put the man in a Yakuza movie.
