KochiKame Is Coming Back With a New Anime

KochiKame is officially coming back with a brand-new anime. The announcement was made at Jump Festa 2026 event in Japan, confirming that a new KochiKame project is now in production. Studio Gallop, which animated the original TV series that aired from 1996 to 2004, will return to handle the animation once again.

According to a message posted on the newly launched official website of the anime, 2026 is both the 50th anniversary of the KochiKame manga and the 30th anniversary of the anime. The statement confirms that the new project, titled Shin KochiKame, will feature a fresh new style along with an entirely new Japanese cast, while still aiming to keep the spirit of the original series intact. “Animation production is being handled by Gallop, the same studio that worked on the KochiKame anime 30 years ago. Please look forward to the new yet nostalgic Shin KochiKame,” the message reads.

Details about the director, voice cast, and release window have not been announced yet.

KochiKame, fully titled Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Koen-mae Hashutsujo (translated: This Is a Police Box in Front of Kameari Park in Katsushika Ward) and known internationally as Tokyo Beat Cops, is a comedy manga written by Osamu Akimoto. The series ran from September 1976 to September 2016 in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump and was collected into more than 200 volumes, making it one of the longest-running manga series of all time.

The anime adaptation produced over 300 episodes and aired in India on Hungama TV and Disney XD in multiple regional languages. While it no longer airs on television, the show is still widely remembered in India and is part of pop culture. It is also particularly remembered for its catchy Hindi opening theme.

KochiKame follows Kankichi “Ryo-san” Ryotsu, a loud, money-obsessed and endlessly stubborn police officer stationed in downtown Tokyo. Known for his wild ideas and constant attempts at quick cash schemes, Ryotsu routinely drags his fellow officers and his short-tempered boss into chaos, with predictably disastrous results.
