Komi Can’t Communicate Manga Ends After Eight Years

Komi Can’t Communicate, the coming-of-age romantic comedy about a high school girl with extreme social anxiety, has ended after an eight-year run.

Written by Tomohito Oda, the manga ran in Weekly Shonen Sunday, published by Shogakukan, from May 2016 to January 29, 2025. It currently spans 499 chapters across 36 volumes. Viz Media publishes the series in English, while Shogakukan Asia handles distribution in Southeast Asia. Only Viz editions are available in India.

The final chapter, titled, People Change, follows Komi and her classmates as they graduate. Tadano delivers a speech reflecting on their school years, calling it a place where “not a day went by without surprises.” He acknowledges that leaving will be difficult and facing new people will be nerve-wracking.

As Komi listens, she hears him mention that the most unusual person he met was also his first friend. She realises she’ll be okay. Even if she isn’t “normal,” she has made many friends who accept her for who she is. Now, she’s someone others approach, showing how much she has grown. And on that happy note, the chapter ends.

The final volume, Volume 37, will include a special “final” chapter, a trend seen in other completed manga series.

Viz Media describes Komi Can’t Communicate as:

“The journey to 100 friends begins with a single conversation. Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve! With the whole student body keeping their distance and Komi unable to utter a single word, friendship might be forever beyond her reach.Timid Tadano is a total wallflower, and that’s just the way he likes it. But all that changes when he finds himself alone in a classroom on the first day of high school with the legendary Komi. He quickly realizes she isn’t aloof—she’s just super awkward. Now he’s made it his mission to help her on her quest to make 100 friends!”
