KPop Demon Hunters 2 might not come until 2029

It would be the understatement of the year to say that 2025 is the year of KPop Demon Hunters. The animated sensation from Sony Animation and Netflix has been on everyone’s minds since its June debut this year. KPop Demon Hunters follows fictional girlband Huntr/x, global K-pop superstars by day and demon slayers and world protectors by night. The film has become so beloved — breaking records, inspiring fanfic, cosplay, and even new toys — that it’s no wonder everyone is looking forward to a sequel.

According to Bloomberg and as further confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, the wait may last until 2029. According to the latter’s sources, Netflix has closed a deal with the directors of KPop Demon Hunters, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, as well as Sony Animation, for the sequel. Talent is still being finalized, but we would be surprised indeed if Huntr/x’s voice or singing talent were changed in any way.

The timeline isn’t too surprising for an animated film. Animation takes time to perfect, and with KPop Demon Hunters still a hot topic for children and adults alike, Netflix and Sony will want to take their time bringing a sequel to life that captures everything that made the original movie so well-received.

Unfortunately, if anyone was looking forward to a live-action remake in the hope that it’ll tide you over until the sequel’s release, we have bad news: its creators are not interested.

But not all is lost. While fans may have to wait until 2029 to get a sequel, that doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll have to wait that long to see Rumi, Zoey, and Mira again. An animated short titled DEBUT: A KPop Demon Hunters Story is currently in the works, and while we don’t know exactly what to expect, we speculate that it might be a prequel following Huntr/x during their early days in the K-pop scene.
