Summary
- Potential Max Payne 3 remaster or port may not be happening, possibly due to GTA Trilogy remaster fallout.
- GTA Trilogy’s Definitive Edition issues could be impacting future ports.
- Remedy’s Max Payne remakes still underway.
Fans of Max Payne 3 who have been holding onto hope of a port or remaster may be out of luck, according to a reputable leaker. Unfortunately, the fate of another Rockstar Games remaster may mean that a redux of Max Payne 3 isn’t happening, at least for the moment.
Rockstar Games is gearing up for the release of the extremely anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, which has had its release date moved back to 2026. Fans are extremely eager for its launch and are being promised a lot, with the head of Take-Two claiming that GTA 6 was delayed to make it the best thing anyone’s ever seen. However, some fans are still hoping to see the return of other Rockstar titles, among them Grand Theft Auto 4 and Max Payne 3.

Now, known leaker Tez2 has shared that Rockstar Games had plans for a Max Payne 3 port, but it may have since been canned or indefinitely postponed. In a prior leak, Tez2 said that someone at Rockstar had teased a GTA 4 port, and that the original plan from years ago, during the pandemic era, was for a Max Payne 3 port to follow it. However, they clarified that those plans allegedly changed after the release of the critically panned Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. Tez2 says that the changes to this plan mean that they now have no idea if there’s a Max Payne 3 port in the works anymore, and that fans should probably assume that it’s not happening for now.
GTA Definitive Edition Had a Big Impact, in a Bad Way
As fans of Rockstar Games are well aware, the so-called Definitive Edition of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas were a tremendous mess at launch. Glitches, visual problems, and arguable downgrades in some character models angered fans of the classics, and led to Rockstar Games releasing a number of patches in order to try and fix the worst parts. Rather than rushing out more potentially flawed versions of older games, it seems that Rockstar and Take-Two may have decided to slow their pace, though the rumor of a GTA 4 port being in the works still stands.
While this news may be disappointing, there’s still good news for Max Payne fans. Remedy Entertainment is currently working on remakes of Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, which moved into full production last year. In the event that a Max Payne 3 port is on hold, it may launch later on as part of a definitive edition featuring all three games. For now, though, players should take any news regarding the third entry with a grain of salt, as nothing official has been announced.
