Magic the Gathering has officially revealed a suite of brand-new Final Fantasy-themed products coming for the holiday season, including some brand-new cards. The beloved trading card game from Wizards of the Coast has broken bold new ground with its crossover sets this year, bringing a variety of new franchises to the game. 2025 has already featured a pair of full crossovers for Magic the Gathering, with both Final Fantasy and Spider-Man sets releasing to massive fanfare. Now, one of the year’s most popular expansions is getting even more new content.
Magic the Gathering‘s Final Fantasy set has easily served as one of the most popular sets throughout the game’s more than 30-year-long life. Final Fantasy quickly became one of the biggest releases in Magic the Gathering history, introducing the beloved JRPG franchise with plenty of excitement. The set has both changed the game’s meta through powerful cards like “Vivi Ornitier” and “Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier” and added some of the game’s most expensive cards with the serialized “Traveling Chocobo.” Now, fans are set to receive even more Final Fantasy cards to collect.
Wizards of the Coast officially announced even more Final Fantasy content coming to Magic the Gathering on Friday afternoon. The developer shared four new “Scene Boxes” that will be coming later this year, with Final Fantasy 1, Final Fantasy 8, Final Fantasy 9, and Final Fantasy 15 being represented. The scene boxes are set to include new artworks of pre-existing Final Fantasy cards alongside entirely new cards based on the games, as well as 3 Final Fantasy booster packs. The new Magic the Gathering Scene Boxes are set to launch sometime during the holiday season.
Magic the Gathering Adding New Final Fantasy Cards
Final Fantasy‘s new Scene Boxes will look to further capitalize on one of Magic the Gathering‘s hottest sets of the year. The suite of new cards coming to the game will bring more representation to other entries in the Final Fantasy franchise, with each Scene Box based on games that were not included as pre-constructed Commander Decks. The Final Fantasy cards will all be included as an extension of the “Commander: Final Fantasy” expansion, meaning that the cards will not be legal for Magic the Gathering‘s Standard format.
While Magic the Gathering and Final Fantasy have been a match made in heaven, the card game has plenty more exciting content ahead for fans. Wizards of the Coast will introduce its third “Universes Beyond” set of the year as 2025’s final expansion, with new cards based on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: the Last Airbender. The developer has also already revealed some of the first sets for 2026, with “Lorwyn Eclipsed” and “Secrets of Strixhaven” joined by newly-announced sets for Star Trek and The Hobbit. Magic the Gathering fans should have lots to look forward to from the card game in the near future.
