Marvel Rivals has teamed up with Marvel Animation for its first-ever PvE mode, Marvel Zombies. The first season of the Marvel Zombies animated miniseries just wrapped up on Disney Plus last month, and now Rivals is getting in on the undead fun just in time for spooky season.
There will be five heroes to choose from in the new mode: Thor, Blade, Magik, Jeff, and the Punisher. Each of them will have a special new ability to aid them in fighting what Danny Koo, executive producer at Marvel Games, calls “endless waves of zombies.” Jeff can charge through hordes, Blade wields bouncing Moon Blades, Magik can now stay in Darkchild form indefinitely, and the same is true of Thor and his Awakened state.
The gameplay shown off in the trailer looks very different from a typical Marvel Rivals match — with the heroes’ big, sweeping attacks against enemy waves, it’s almost reminiscent of a musou game like Dynasty Warriors. Alongside these waves of undead, players will need to contend with two bosses: zombie Namor and the Queen of the Dead, aka zombie Wanda Maximoff. Both characters come from the Marvel Zombies miniseries, which is a nice inclusion for fans, though Koo warns that both are “tough” adversaries to beat.
There are still a lot of details that are unknown about the new game mode, like how it will relate to in-game rewards and potential future events, how long a round lasts, and how boss fights are triggered. However, players won’t have to wait much longer to find out. Marvel Zombies will arrive in Marvel Rivals on Oct. 23 on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X. Season 5 of the competitive hero shooter game will also be in players’ hands soon; it’s slated for release on Nov. 14.
