Marvel: Strongest X-Men

Marvel Comics introduced the X-Men as a group of powerful mutants who stepped up and saved civilization, despite the fact many humans were not appreciative of them. The X-Men featured a wide array of powers that made them strong in many ways. But which X-Men are the strongest?

Some have super strengths, while others have amazing healing abilities and adamantium shells on their skeletons. Still, others could control people’s minds or the weather. While strength can be measured in several ways, the strongest X-Men always rose to the occasion to help when the world needed them.

Updated March 6, 2025 by Ben Painter: Before the popularity of the Avengers movies, the X-Men were the biggest Marvel superhero team. The team is having a bit of a resurgence as they are slowly being introduced back into the mainstream of Marvel continuity, starting with the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, which starred fan-favorite and Marvel powerhouse, Wolverine.

Since the team’s introduction back in 1963, A LOT of different heroes have donned the iconic X costumes. Mutant abilities come with various power levels. The strongest mutants are known as Omega-level, and there are a few who have the potential of utter devastation. This update adds five more of the strongest X-Men in Marvel Comics.

Strong Guy

Greatest Show Of Strength: Becoming The King Of Hell

• Real Name: Guido Carosella
• First Appearance: New Mutants #29 (March, 1985)
• Powers: Kinetic Energy Absorption, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability

Strong Guy is best known as being a member of the X-Men subgroup, X-Factor, and possesses immense physical strength due to his mutation. He can absorb massive amounts of kinetic energy, which he channels into increasing his muscle mass.

Although he can only absorb this energy for 90 seconds, he remains at his altered size permanently, something he discovered when his powers first manifested, as the top half of his body is in this expanded state. With massive power at his peak, he has been shown to go toe-to-toe with the Thing and Red Hulk and even spent some time as the King of Hell thanks to his work with Mephisto.

Warpath

• Real Name: James Proudstar

• Powers: Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Speed, Superhuman Stamina, Invulnerability, Superhuman Agility, Superhuman Reflexes, Superhuman Hearing, Night Vision, Flight, Regenerative Healing Factor, Apache Shaman Abilities

Warpath first appeared as part of the New Mutants roster of X-Men back in the 80s and has been on both the X-Men and X-Force throughout his tenure. His powers are those of a very advanced human; he has superhuman strength, reflexes, stamina, hearing, etc. Anything that a normal human can do, he does to superhuman levels.

Gentle

Greatest Show Of Strength: Holding His Own Against Predator X

• Real Name: Nezhno Abidemi
• First Appearance: New X-Men (Vol. 2) #23, (February, 2006)
• Powers: Muscle-Mass Expansion, Superhuman Strength, Superhuman Durability

This is a fairly new character, making his debut in 2006. Gentle is a mutant from Wakanda who can increase his muscle mass, which greatly enhances his strength and size. It is not known what lengths this can go to, so seemingly, his strength is unlimited.

His body is adorned with Vibranium tattoos which help to protect his body from his drastic changes in size due to his powers. His physical strength is shown to be as powerful as Colossus’, and he has easily held his own against Sentinels and the mutant-killing monster Predator X.

Angel/Archangel

Angel has been around since the beginning, being a member of the original X-Men team. His powers, originally, weren’t too powerful, using his wings to fly, but other than that, not much else.

It was when he became a servant of Apocalypse as one of his Horsemen that his powers greatly increased. Angel gained techno-organic wings that could act as blades and could regenerate his health like Wolverine, and possess a hypersonic scream. There’s also a much faster and better Angel who goes by the name of Archangel. Worthington changes from Angel to his more evil version throughout different comics, not staying as one or the other for too long.

Morph

• Powers: Shapeshifting, Power Mimicry

A character that did not first appear on the page, Morph was first introduced in X-Men: The Animated Series, which continued in X-Men ’97 on Disney+. Morph is a very interesting character. Not much is known about their personal life, but they do have an interesting powerset.

Morph can shapeshift, much like Mystique, but they can also mimic the powers of who they transform into, but only their physical powers. For example, if they were to shift into Nightcrawler, they would gain his tail and wall-crawling abilities, but not his teleportation. There seems to be no limit to this ability, as they have transformed into the Hulk and the Juggernaut and kept their immense strength. A handy power to have.

• Powers: Energy Conversion, Dissolution, Disruption, Enhanced Conditioning, Accelerating Regeneration, Speed Augmentation, Enhancement, Static Interference, Vibration Emission, Remote Charging, Shearing/Cutting, Acceleration Bestowal, Hypnotic Charm, Mutant Energy Control.

Gambit can tap into an object’s latent kinetic energy and charge it, causing it to explode. The Ragin’ Cajun is most famous for doing this with his iconic playing cards, but there are no limits to what he can do this with. The larger the object, the longer it takes to charge, however.

Other abilities he possesses are his enhanced speed and strength, immunity to telepathy, and his hypnotic charm, which has worked on even the demon Mephisto. After years of production hell, Gambit recently made his reappearance on the big screen played by Channing Tatum, who has been trying to portray the character for over ten years.

As an Omega-level mutant, Joshua Foley has elite control over his powers. There are no limits to his healing powers, and he can resurrect and heal his fellow X-Men in the field. Elixir has shown it can cure diseases completely, such as the mutant-killing legacy virus and m-pox.

His control over cells at a molecular level can work the other way, as he can perform a ‘Death Touch,’ which can turn his opponent’s bodies against them. This power has even been shown to work on powerful foes and even demons. Elixir can even resurrect himself. The mutant is a powerful ally but an even bigger threat. Elixir deserves some love in the mainstream.

A member of the group of X-Men students dubbed Generation X, Monet St. Croix or just simply “M” is a powerful mutant with a wide range of abilities including enhanced strength, flight and durability. She also has a secondary ability to transform into a creature known as Penance, who has inpenetrable diamond skin and razor-sharp claws.

Whatever persona she is, M is one of the strongest X-Men. Working for all of mutant kind, she has become a valued member of the X-Men, X-Corps and X-Factor. A strong personality that matches her powerset, she never settles for anything less than she is worth, something that many can see as a solid X-Man trait.

He used the genes of Colossus, Kid Omega, Unus the Untouchable, Shadowcat, & X23, and Rasputin was granted most of their abilities. However, those versions aren’t as strong as the originals, but combined, they make for an insane powerset, and she has proven to be a formidable member of the X-Men in recent years, especially with her weapon, the Soulsword, a copy of the signature blade of the mutant Magik.

Lucas Bishop was born in a dystopian future where mutants were outlawed by society; he found himself in the present day and joined the X-Men. Bishop can absorb different types of energy, including magic and psychic energy. He can redirect it as a concussive blast or store the energy inside of him, which increases all of his attributes.

Cable is the son of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor (Jean Grey’s genetic clone) and was infected with a techno-organic virus and sent into the future to be saved. Nathan Summers eventually became the time-travelling soldier known as Cable. He inherited his mother’s powerful telepathic and telekinetic powers and has been shown to hold his own against some of Marvel’s most powerful.

The true limits of Cable’s powers were not showcased in Deadpool 2, but the Ryan Reynolds-led movie did give fans a taste of what the mutant can do. Cable did not find a cure for his virus and instead keeps it at bay using his powers, some may argue that his greatest show of strength is surviving each day against a virus that would kill him if not for his telekinetic powers.

Deadpool is a relatively new character in comic book terms, first appearing in the ’90s, but he has certainly grown to become one of the most popular comic characters. Largely thanks to Ryan Reynolds putting the character correctly into the mainstream.

Although known for his solo work, Deadpool has appeared as a member of the X-Men. The Merc With A Mouth has a healing factor greater than Wolverine’s. Being able to heal himself from a single cell. Wade Wilson has tangled with the strongest foes, defeating Thanos and even outsmarting him by using the infinity gauntlet. Deadpool’s strongest ability is the fact he knows he is in a comic book, which he uses as his greatest weapon.

Nightcrawler

His real name may be Kurt Wagner, but in the Munich circus, he was known as the Amazing Nightcrawler. Wagner possessed superhuman speed and agility, and he was able to teleport almost anywhere. He was perfect for stealth missions and daring rescues.

In the films, Nightcrawler first appears working for Stryker before joining the X-Men after they were able to subdue him. He would help Professor X’s team in the original trilogy. A younger version would appear in later X-Men films, including saving Jean Grey at the beginning of Apocalypse.

Colossus is a giant of a mutant with enough strength to throw Wolverine around like a rag doll. Colossus was, at times, shown to be capable of lifting to 100 tons, easily making him one of the physically strongest mutants. In the comics, Colossus can stand toe to toe with The Thing and Hulk.

In the films, he starts as just a regular, intelligent human until he takes a serum that he thinks will make him a more valuable member of the team. He does become a more physically valuable member, but also turns into a blue, furry beast as well.

Bobby Drake may not be physically as strong as other members of the X-Men, but he more than makes up for it with his ability to turn anything into ice. In the comics, Iceman was one of the original X-Men, joining the team as a teenager and honing and perfecting his skills. Eventually, he learned how to absorb enough water to make ice clones.

In the films, he is already at the school when Rogue shows up, and he often steps up to help the four main film characters, Wolverine, Jean Grey, Cyclops, and Storm. He’s shown to still be helping the team through the events of Days of Future Past.

Much like Iceman, what Storm lacks in physical strength she makes up for with her ability to control the weather. She can harness any kind of weather event and use it as a weapon. From something as simple as summoning wind to throwing lightning bolts, if it’s connected to weather, Storm is unstoppable.
