Metal Gear Solid 3 remake release date (and Ape Escape mode) leaks via PSN

Snake vs. Monkey pits Naked Snake against the runaway apes of Sony’s Ape Escape franchise, tasking the secret agent with securing a troop of monkeys by stunning them with non-lethal weapons. Successfully completing the task in the PS2 versions of Metal Gear Solid 3 netted the player a monkey mask and banana camouflage suit for Snake. The return of Snake vs. Monkey further confirms that now is a good time to be an Ape Escape fan.

Konami’s release date trailer for Metal Gear Solid Delta also teases that something more is coming to the remake. What that means is unclear, though re-releases of Metal Gear Solid 3, namely the Subsistence version, added the Metal Gear Online multiplayer mode and classic versions of Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

While Konami has not officially promoted the summertime release of Metal Gear Solid Delta yet, the trailer that revealed that long-awaited date certainly appears legit. With reports of a new State of Play presentation from Sony imminent, we can probably expect this one to be confirmed quickly. Polygon has reached out to Konami to confirm MGS Delta’s August release and will update this post when the company responds.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2004. The prequel to the original Metal Gear is set in the 1960s, and puts players in control of Naked Snake (aka Big Boss, the antagonist of the very first game in the franchise) on a mission set largely in Soviet Russia. Metal Gear Solid 3 introduced a camouflage-based layer to the franchise’s stealth-based gameplay, along with close-quarters combat mechanics.

The follow-up to the groundbreaking and divisive Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was met with near-universal acclaim when it was first released. The game’s memorable story, in-depth boss fights, and heavily memed ladder-climbing sequence helped make Metal Gear Solid 3 one of the most beloved entries in the franchise — to say nothing of its earwormy “Snake Eater” theme song.
