NetherRealm Studios confirmed that there will be no additional DLC characters or story chapters for Mortal Kombat 1 going forward. Although the studio will continue to support Mortal Kombat 1, NetherRealm Studios is shifting its focus onto the next project.

Thus far, Mortal Kombat 1 has enjoyed nearly a year and a half of post-launch support following the game’s release on September 19, 2023. However, reports of internal issues and uncertainty regarding Warner Bros’ gaming division brought Mortal Kombat 1’s support going into the immediate future. Speculation among fans about a potential Injustice 3 also brought topics of discussion about the future of Mortal Kombat 1, and when Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition was announced and released, speculation ramped up even further regarding a potential end of support for NetherRealm Studios’ latest game. The community called on NetherRealm Studios to address the state of Mortal Kombat 1, and the developers answered with some much-needed clarification, despite it being disappointing news for fans.

The Definitive Edition of Mortal Kombat 1 features a handful of flashy new movie skins, but which one looks the best of the bunch?

The official Twitter account for NetherRealm Studios acknowledged the Mortal Kombat 1 community’s requests for continued game support, but the developers will not be releasing any more DLC characters or story chapters going forward. Instead, the studio will continue to support the game through balance adjustments and bug fixes through free updates. The developers at NetherRealm Studios also noted that they need to “shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.” However, it’s unclear whether the new game will be a continuation of NetherRealm Studios’ Mortal Kombat or Injustice franchises.

Mortal Kombat 1 Will No Longer Receive New DLC Content, Characters or Story Chapters

It’s clear from the community’s overall response that many Mortal Kombat 1 players wanted NetherRealm Studios to support the game with more DLC releases. Some fans are disappointed with the lack of communication and transparency throughout 2025 so far, while others want NetherRealm Studios to learn from Mortal Kombat 1 and the areas where the game fell short. Although many fans are frustrated and saddened that Mortal Kombat 1 will not receive “years and years” of content, some are also relieved that NetherRealm Studios addressed the community to confirm development of their next game.

Although fans aren’t happy about Mortal Kombat 1 Definitive Edition, new players can get what’s essentially a complete version of the game with paid DLC, including the Khaos Reigns expansion, and other post-launch content in one convenient package. What’s more, the collection includes Mortal Kombat Movie Skins for Johnny Cage, Shao Khan, Kitana, Scorpion, and Sub-Zero at no additional cost.
