Spoilers below, proceed with caution.

Emerging From The Tomb

Say Hello To Limgrave

Though Bethesda is typically known for those moments where the whole world unveils itself near the beginning of the game after stepping out of a dungeon, FromSoftware games don’t usually pull the same trick until Elden Ring.

When the players step out of the tutorial dungeon and into Limgrave, not only do they see the whole world laid out in front of them, but they can literally see the trajectory of their path through the main story from that moment, from Stormveil, to the Erdtree, to the Cauldron. It’s an incredible moment of visual splendor, beckoning the great Limgrave locations that must be captured in a movie adaptation.

Fighting Messmer

The Damned Crusader

Shadow of the Erdtree isn’t just one of the best FromSoftware DLCs ever made because of its incredible scope and depth, but because it tells a compelling new story that casts a dark light on what players thought they knew about the lore of the world.

That comes into greatest focus with Messmer, the child of Marika doomed to fight a horrible crusade against the Hornsent, and abandoned. He’s a tragic villainous character whose fight is full of narrative pathos.

6

Nokron Revealed

The Underground

Elden Ring‘s open world map is big, no denying it, but many people were still stunned by just how big it was. That’s because not only is there the overworld map, but the underworld map too, a labyrinthine maze of underground cities and tunnels holding tons more content.

These FromSoftware worlds are rich in lore and stories and definitely need revisiting in new games.

But no moment is as good as that first elevator into the depths where the player is suddenly greeted by an impossible sky of stars. It’s a wonderful moment of visual splendor that teases just how big Elden Ring truly is.

5

Melina’s Sacrifice

Finger-Maiden

Things rarely end up happy for characters in FromSoftware games. Usually, they’re doomed to a fate from the very beginning, and resisting that fate only makes things worse. For Melina, it’s that she will have to sacrifice herself to burn the Erdtree, and she knows it from the very beginning.

What makes the moment so emotional is that she’s a constant companion throughout the game who seems to have the player’s best interests at heart. This moment of self-sacrifice propels the player into the final act and is one of the emotional highpoints in the game.

4

The Festival Of War

Blood and Glory

Early in Limgrave, players can learn quickly about a so-called Festival of War held in Caelid by Radahn, the demi-god child of Marika and Radagon. However, when players finally get there, things are slightly different than expected.

Elden Ring: 7 Things You Didn’t Know About Radahn

Starscourge Radahn is one of Elden Ring’s central figures. It stands to reason that many players may not know these facts about the character.

Radahn has long-lost his mind and has become a mindless husk. Turns out the Festival of War is actually a festival dedicated to battle with Radahn on the crimson dunes. It’s a wildly cinematic battle with flashy visuals and a tragic story at its center.

3

Confronting Marika/Radagon

The Old Gods

Throughout all of Elden Ring, Marika is one of the most important (and possibly evil) characters, but the player doesn’t get to talk to her. Instead, she’s seemingly imprisoned within the Erdtree after shattering the Elden Ring.

When the player finally gets there, they learn the truth for certain. Marika and Radagon are the same person, two halves of the same self, and they form part of the final boss to fend the player off for good. This confrontation with the Gods needs to be in any cinematic adaptation.

2

Bayle The Dread

Foul Dragon

Though there are countless dramatic bosses in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, none are quite as extra, cinematic, and over-the-top wild as the fight with Bayle the Dread hidden away in the Jagged Peak, the craziest dragon fight FromSoftware has ever designed that’s got so many visual effects it’s liable to make the frames drop.

Even better, Igon can be tagged in during the fight and scream dramatic curses at Bayle and proclaim his hatred in a shredded voice. It’s so wonderfully extra and metal, making it one of the most cinematic moments in the entire game.

1

Malenia, Blade of Miquella

The Rot Goddess

Of all the bosses in Elden Ring, few have the reputation that Malenia has. She is a tragic character, locked away at the bottom of the Haligtree, full of secrets, and doomed to rot away as the champion of the Rot Goddess, and waiting for her brother’s return, even though he never will.

It’s a tragic, difficult, epic fight full of surprisingly beautiful imagery and incredible music. It’s everything that makes a FromSoftware boss fight great, even if the difficulty is incredibly high, making it one of the most cinematic moments in the entire game.
