This article contains spoilers from the Naruto series.
The era of Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha can be considered to be the most dangerous in the history of the Naruto world. This era saw the rise of some incredibly powerful enemies, such as the likes of Akatsuki, and even the resurgence of Kaguya Otsutsuki, the progenitor of chakra itself. To combat threats such as these, it goes without saying that unprecedented strength was required.
This is one of the many reasons why Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha ended up becoming as strong as they became. It can be said that among all the ninjas, Naruto and Sasuke were the strongest, and that their era of ninjas was also the strongest in history. However, fans might wonder as to who the strongest shinobi was before this recent Naruto era. Kishimoto has already answered this question through the manga, and it is none other than the First Hokage of Konoha, Hashirama Senju.
Kishimoto Has Confirmed Hashirama Senju As The Strongest Ninja Before Naruto’s Era
Hashirama Was Known As The God Of Shinobi
- Madara Uchiha rivaled Hashirama Senju in power
- No other shinobi came close to these two
Fans know Hashirama Senju to be incredibly powerful. He was the First Hokage of Konoha, but even before that, he was the leader of the Senju Clan. Hashirama was born and bred on the battlefield, so weakness wasn’t an option for him. To protect those he loved, he had to gain immense strength, and to secure a better future for those who came after him, Hashirama knew that he had to do better. These goals pushed Hashirama Senju to unprecedented heights, and he became a ninja considered to be the God of Shinobi.

To be clear, Hashirama Senju wasn’t the only one at the peak of the ninja world. Madara Uchiha was just as strong as him, as indicated multiple times by the author. Even in their final battle, the clash was only settled because Madara never expected Hashirama to stab him in the back. Regardless, they were around the same level, with Hashirama having arguably more stamina, and hence, being the strongest shinobi before the Naruto era.
Might Guy Eventually Surpassed Hashirama Senju
Madara Acknowledged Guy’s Power
While Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha were, undoubtedly, the strongest ninjas before Naruto’s time, there were others who attained immense strength as well. Might Guy is one such ninja. Even without Ninjutsu and Genjutsu, Guy achieved tremendous power. He trained immensely hard and mastered the Eight Inner Gates technique.
Roar, my youth! — Might Guy
Guy hit his peak in the Fourth Great Ninja War, and he got so strong that he could injure even Six Paths Madara. At this point, Guy was, undoubtedly, stronger than both Hashirama Senju and Madara Uchiha from the old era. However, the fact is that Guy hit this power in Naruto’s era, so technically, it doesn’t count. Regardless, Guy was a flawless ninja who possessed incredible power such that even Madara declared him to be the strongest, especially when it came to Taijutsu.
