New PS5 Pro Model is Out Now

A new PlayStation 5 Pro model has hit store shelves, reportedly bringing a handful of improvements over the original 2024 model. Though Sony raised the price of the PS5 base model, PS5 Slim, and PS5 Pro by $50 each back in August, the slight improvements in the new PlayStation 5 Pro model might convince some to finally take the plunge and upgrade.

The PlayStation 5 Pro was one of the worst-kept secrets in gaming prior to its official unveiling back in September 2024, with rumors of its existence popping up frequently from March 2024 onwards. For $699 (now $749.99 following August’s price hike), PS5 Pro users received a dramatically faster GPU, 2TB of internal storage, and an advanced AI upscaling system called PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.

New And Improved PlayStation 5 Pro Model Is Out Now

A recent video from YouTube tech analyst Austin Evans confirmed that a new PlayStation 5 Pro model (labeled ‘CFI-7121’) is out in the wild, available for purchase. Evans performed a thorough teardown on the new model, comparing key components like weight, sound, and energy consumption directly to the original PS5 Pro model released last year.

During the course of the breakdown video, Evans discovers the reasons behind the new PS5 Pro model’s lighter weight. The 87g difference is spread across the new model’s lighter fan, power supply, rear heat sink, streamlined motherboard, and the use of a plastic fan grill as opposed to the original’s metal one.

The new PlayStation 5 Pro model also comes with a new iteration of the DualSense controller, which is labeled as ‘CFI-ZCT2W’. But while the included DualSense may technically be a new model, Austin Evans found no significant difference between it and the original DualSense model aside from the removal of its rear mic. Similarly, internal parts like the DualSense’s battery and motors also differ in this new model, but they reportedly don’t function any differently or have a significant impact on the controller.

This new PS5 Pro model was leaked at the end of September, though the rumored removable battery for the DualSense seemingly didn’t come to fruition.

Ultimately, Evans determines that although the differences between the 2024 PS5 Pro and the new model are intriguing and technically an improvement on paper, they’re not “a dramatic life-changing story.”
