The successor to one of the most popular gaming consoles of all time has finally been announced. Nintendo just confirmed that the Switch 2 will release in 2025! There is no specific launch date set, price, or much else, however, we were treated to a first look at the console in the reveal trailer. Nintendo said it plans to reveal more about the Switch 2 at Nintendo Direct on April 2nd.
During the first look trailer, it appeared to show a new Mario Kart game, rumored to be one of the flagship titles at launch.
Nintendo Switch 2 features
The Switch 2 appears to retain the hybrid design that made the original Switch such a success. Players will be able to enjoy games both in portable mode and on their TVs using a dock. Additionally, the detachable Joy-Con controllers have been redesigned to include magnetic attachment to the console, offering improved convenience and durability.
- A U-shaped kickstand for better stability.
- An additional USB-C port for enhanced connectivity.
- A new button on the right Joy-Con, though its function has yet to be disclosed.
Nintendo confirmed that the Switch 2 will support backward compatibility for both physical and digital games from the original Switch.
Nintendo Switch 2 release date prediction
Outside of the year-long 2025 window, we can only speculate when a Nintendo Switch 2 release date may be. Based on the “Nintendo Switch 2 Experience” event schedule, we will not be seeing the device on shelves until at least June. Nintendo plans to reveal more details about the Switch 2 in a dedicated Nintendo Direct presentation on April 2, 2025. Fans can expect further information on the console’s features, launch titles, and pricing at that time.
Nintendo Switch 2 price & pre order expectations
The Nintendo Switch OLED launched at an MSRP of $349.99, $150 more than the original. We expect the Switch 2 to start somewhere near here too, possibly costing as much as $399.99.
We have a hunch that when further details are shared at Nintendo Direct, pre orders could immediately go live. Speculative but this is a fairly common industry trend.
