It is a fact that Larian does not plan to make Baldur’s Gate 4. But with creative modders, who needs a sequel? We’ve already seen people turning parts of World of Warcraft into Baldur’s Gate 3, but a more ambitious project has come to our attention. As it turns out, a group of modders began adapting one of the best DnD Adventures for Baldur’s Gate 3 – Curse of Strahd.
Back in 1978, Tracy and Laura Hickman published a DnD adventure that would grow to become the world of Ravenloft, whose master is Strahd Von Zarovich. Over time, it became THE gothic adventure for Dungeons and Dragons, with Strahd becoming one of the most famous villains of the whole game. Over time, it was adapted for every edition change, and as the current edition of DnD is the 5th edition (and the one Baldur’s Gate 3 is based upon), we got the Curse of Strahd adventure module in 2016. Its popularity skyrocketed, as it was hailed as one of the best adventures of all time, due to its detailed worldbuilding, proactive villain, gripping story that you can modify to your liking if you so please, and replayability (which is extremely rare for DnD published adventures).
And now, it looks like some dedicated fans are trying to mix Ravenloft and Baldur’s Gate 3, and the work-in-progress shots already look amazing.
Project Strahd – An Adaptation of the Curse of Strahd for Baldur’s Gate 3
It came to our attention that a group of modders started a project with the goal of making the Curse of Strahd as a Mod for Baldur’s Gate 3. It is a completely fan-driven project that began a couple of months ago, intended to be a full campaign. They have their own subreddit, where you can follow the progress, ask questions, and even help out (they do have some open applications, if you are interested in helping).

For now, it is intended as a campaign separate from the original BG3, with its own quests, NPCs (no Astarion this time, that would be too many vampires!), regions, and more. Naturally, all the companions will be fully romancable, as well as Strahd himself (even though it isn’t the best idea, as confirmed by the team). Your Tav will also be “brand new”, ie, no Tadpoles or anything. When asked about a possible Durge-style protagonist, the creators said there will actually be four of them. The recent application for a Voice Actor had four different monologues, titled: The Hopeful, The Devout, The Villain, and The Superstitious. Perhaps these are the four “backgrounds” they mentioned?
In any case, if they manage to transfer even the slightest bit of Curse of Strahd to BG3, it will be a phenomenal game. As the Project Strahd team said, expect some “Haunting environments, Immersive mechanics, and Eerie encounters that will make Barovia a living, breathing nightmare.” We will be following this project with great interest.
