Reaching the new maximum trainer level in Pokemon GO could prove a challenge for players near the top, and a new release of alleged datamnined information shows just how much work they’ll have to do to hit level 80. A big overhaul of the leveling system in Pokemon GO is coming on October 15, and some fans have been upset with the way Scopely is handling it, especially if the newly released rumors are true.
When Pokemon GO was first released in July 2016, players could only hit a max trainer level of 40, and while they could continue to gain XP, no additional level-ups would be possible. That changed in 2020 with an update that allowed Pokemon GO players to reach level 50, although some additional Level-Up Research tasks were added at each of the top 10 levels, providing additional challenges that players must overcome to qualify for inclusion in the upper echelon of players.
Pokemon GO‘s newest level cap increase was just recently announced, bumping up the maximum trainer level from 50 to 80, but the news left some questions as to how Level-Up Research would be handled once players start reaching that plateau. Now, a new set of information has hit TheSilphRoad on Reddit, claiming to be datamined from the game’s code and showing just what players will need to do to reach each level between 71 and 80. If the information is correct, many of the required tasks are simply recycled from the old level-up system and delayed by 30 levels, which should provide a familiar feeling for those who have already completed the climb to level 50.
Pokemon GO’s Rumored New Upper Level Requirements
- Level 71: Earn 15 platinum medals, power up Legendary or Mythical Pokemon 20 times, make 999 Nice Throws, catch 100 Pokemon in a single day
- Level 72: Earn 20 platinum medals, complete a route seven days in a row, use 200 supereffective Charged Attacks, earn 1 million Stardust
- Level 73: Earn 25 platinum medals, purify 100 Shadow Pokemon, power up three Pokemon to their max CP, win 30 raids
- Level 74: Earn 30 platinum medals, level up a Max Move 20 times, explore 200 km, complete 250 Field Research Tasks
- Level 75: Earn 34 platinum medals, make 999 Great Throws, hatch 75 eggs, send 500 gifts to friends
- Level 76: Earn 38 platinum medals, defeat 100 Team GO Rocket grunts, explore 300 km, catch 200 Pokemon in a single day
- Level 77: Earn 41 platinum medals, win 100 Max Battles, power up seven Pokemon to their maximum CP, make 10 trades with Pokemon caught at least 300 km apart
- Level 78: Earn 44 platinum medals, earn 400 hearts with Buddy Pokemon, explore 400 km, complete 500 Field Research Tasks
- Level 79: Earn 47 platinum medals, defeat a Team GO Rocket leader 30 times, obtain 50 Lucky Pokemon in trades, hatch 100 eggs
- Level 80: Earn 50 platinum medals, win 80 trainer battles in the GO Battle League, make 999 Excellent Throws, win 80 raids
Some of these tasks are time-consuming but relatively simple to achieve, such as performing 999 Nice Throws to reach level 71 or purifying 100 of Pokemon GO‘s Shadow Pokemon to reach level 73. Others are much more difficult and dependent on chance, like the level 79 task that requires a player to obtain 50 Lucky Pokemon via trades. Many fans seem to be reacting poorly to the datamined list of requirements, with some level 50 players stating they have no intention of repeating some of the more difficult tasks a second time around.
While players prepare to take on a new set of tasks to once again reach the pinnacle, there are also two big Pokemon GO events for October 2025 that are about to start. The Pokemon Legends: Z-A Celebration Event kicks off worldwide on October 16 at 10 AM local time, giving players a chance to catch special background versions of Chikorita, Totodile, and Tepig. Additionally, players in India can look forward to the returning Festival of Lights starting on October 18, featuring glowing versions of several Pokemon and two festival-themed Pikachu variants.
