A fan of the Pokemon Trading Card Game shared a bold idea for the 30th anniversary, reprinting the highly coveted “Moonbreon” with an anniversary stamp. The massively popular TCG based on the long-running monster-catching franchise has been no stranger to pricey cards throughout its history, often fetching exorbitant prices. The iconic Base Set Charizard has long been seen as one of the Pokemon TCG‘s “holy grails,” garnering auctions and sales totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars, while modern Special Illustration Rare cards can often command impressive price tags. However, the “Moonbreon” has earned particularly hallowed status among fans.
The Umbreon VMAX card, commonly referred to as “Moonbreon,” made its debut in the Pokemon TCG‘s Evolving Skies expansion in 2021. The card, released as a special alternate art version of the fan-favorite Eeveelution, was an exceptionally rare pull in a set that already boasted notoriously poor hit rates, causing it to quickly skyrocket in price. The Moonbreon’s “market price” on popular marketplace TCGPlayer currently stands at nearly $1,700 USD, with PSA 10 copies of the card often breaking the $3,000 mark. One Pokemon fan, however, has a unique idea about how the elusive card could become significantly more accessible.

Pokemon TCG Fan Wants Anniversary Moonbreon Reprint
Reddit user good-smoke shared a wild piece of concept art to the Pokemon TCG subreddit, showing off a slightly altered version of the Moonbreon. The attached image shows the Umbreon VMAX card with one major change made to its artwork, applying a 30th anniversary stamp to the right side of the card. The user suggests that its inclusion in a special 30th anniversary set with reprints of older cards could not only help to make the card available for more fans, but also drive down the high price of the original printing. The Pokemon Company even has a past precedent for reprinting some of its most expensive, sought-after cards.

The idea of applying an anniversary stamp to the Moonbreon follows the Pokemon TCG‘s last major anniversary set. Pokemon‘s Celebrations set, first released in 2021, celebrated the 25th anniversary with a variety of new cards, featuring some of the franchise’s most beloved characters and creatures. The expansion also included the “Classic Collection” sub-set, boasting reprints of older cards with a 25th anniversary stamp on the artwork. Classic Collection’s lineup boasted many of the game’s most expensive cards at the time, like the previously-mentioned Base Set Charizard, Shining Magikarp from Neo Revelation, and the Gold Star Umbreon, among others.
Beyond the Celebrations expansion, the Pokemon TCG has taken even further steps to celebrate its history in the past. The XY Evolutions expansion in 2016 launched as a grand homage to Pokemon‘s roots, reprinting a plethora of cards from Pokemon‘s Base Set for the final Pokemon X and Y-era set. The reprinted cards received brand-new re-designs to distinguish them from the older printings, though most details like Attacks, HP, and Retreat Costs were kept the same. The Pokemon Company has yet to officially announce a new expansion specifically honoring the game’s 30th anniversary.
While fans wait for the Pokemon TCG‘s big 30th birthday plans, the game has already given fans lots to look forward to in early 2026. Ascended Heroes debuted in late January as the largest expansion in the TCG’s history, including plenty of exciting chase cards like Mega Dragonite ex and a new artwork for Mega Gengar ex. Pokemon has also revealed its second major expansion of the year, with Mega Zygarde making its Pokemon TCG debut in the Perfect Order set on March 27. The Pokemon TCG‘s 30th anniversary celebrations should be a big event for fans, with plenty of unexpected surprises likely on the way.
