Popular tactical FPS Squad is currently free-to-play on Steam until September 15. Squad also has a steep discount running beyond this date, meaning anyone who enjoys it for free can pick it up at a reduced price.
Squad initially launched in Early Access back in 2015, and finally made its way to full release in 2020. This tactical shooter offers 50v50 firefights on a large scale, offering a realistic FPS experience more in the vein of Arma than Call of Duty. Despite its age, Squad has filled a specific niche in the FPS genre, and throughout 2025 has routinely passed the 20,000 concurrent player mark on Steam.
Squad is Free to Play on Steam Until September 15
Players can currently download and play Squad on Steam free of charge, and it will be available to play until September 15. At the time of writing, this is only a few days away, so players will need to act quickly if they want to get a feel for one of the most realistic war games on the market. Squad boasts “Very Positive” reviews on Steam, with 85% of the almost 80,000 reviews of the game being positive. While it’s certainly aimed towards a section of FPS players, the reviews indicate it’s well worth a try.
Beginners who play and enjoy Squad are in luck. While the free period ends on September 15, Steam is also offering a steep 60% discount on the game until September 18. This reduction brings Squad down to $19.99 from its normal price of $49.99, so it’s worth taking advantage of while it’s available. It should be noted that the all-time lowest price for Squad is $14.99, which it has only fallen to once over the last decade.
Squad recently released its massive 9.0 update, which saw the shooter make the jump to Unreal Engine 5. This also came with tons of new content, indicating that even despite its age, there’s still plenty of life left in Squad yet. Its impressive player count numbers indicate that even now, 10 years after its Early Access release, it’s still a good opportunity to try Squad for the first time.
