“Do Not Open the Death Stranding 2 Map Screen” is the PSA a lot of users share, as opening the Map supposedly triggers the overheat on PS5.
Death Stranding 2 was released only a couple of days before, and both the fans and the critics are showering it with praise left and right. Even though some critics are not that enamoured with the game, we can’t deny that it is right there, next to Clair Obscur and Kingdom Come 2, as a contender for the Game of the Year. But, it looks like it is not all sunshine and rainbows, as one key feature can bring your console to a halt. As it turns out, your PS5 may overheat if you open the map in Death Stranding 2.
Opening the Map in Death Stranding 2 Leads to Overheat on PS5
It came to our attention, as more and more players started reporting, that opening the map in Death Stranding 2 is way more demanding on your console than the rest of the game, which often leads to overheating, which is hardly ideal with the Summer in full swing.
This raises a question: Is it something that you can easily fix? Maybe your PS requires a bit of cleaning? Is it placed in a well-ventilated spot? Is any of that even an issue here, or is this more of a software thing?
Why Is This Happening?
As for the reason behind this issue, the players are certain it is due to the game’s engine, Decima. It is an engine made by Guerrilla Games, and the same engine Horizon games use, as well as Until Dawn and the first Death Stranding. Players reported that the same thing happened with Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4, and with Forbidden West as well. Apparently, the map has no limits on the framerate, meaning that opening the map can send your console into overdrive.
Knowing this, we can safely say that this is a software issue, which is both good and bad. Good, in a way that there is nothing directly wrong with your console. Bad, in a way that the issue is in the engine, meaning that only the devs can do something about it with future patches, so we’re at their mercy.
PS5 Pro Users Apparently Safe
The reports all indicate that this issue is only on the base PlayStation 5. According to reliable sources, opening the map on PS5 Pro does not result in overheating, meaning that this issue is only plaguing the base PS5 community. The Pro is really starting to show its quality.
What Can Be Done?
The best course of action is to flag this problem to the devs. A lot of players mentioned that they have reported the issue to Kojima Productions, but have yet to get an answer. As noted, the devs are surely overwhelmed by the recent release of DS2, and surely can’t check every email that goes their way. But if we send enough reports, they will most definitely notice the issue and address it in future updates. Until then, you can check out the external PS5 coolers, which can help with this overheating issue, especially now as we enter the hottest parts of the Summer.
