Recently Added Xbox Game Pass Co-Op Game is Already a Big Hit

Grounded 2 has broken into the top 10 list of Xbox’s most played games, marking a triumph for the development teams at Obsidian Entertainment and Eidos Montreal. Tough competition from more major games ranking above Grounded 2 shows that it’s been doing extremely well with players since launching in early access.

A follow-up to Obsidian’s backyard survival action-adventure game Grounded, which first entered early access in 2020, Grounded 2 had its own early access launch on July 29 for Xbox Series X/S and PC. With Xbox Game Studios handling publishing duties, it was also one of several day-one games added to Xbox Game Pass in July, which is likely to have helped out its player numbers quite a bit.

Now, 10 days after the early access launch, Grounded 2 appears in 10th place on Xbox’s official most-played games list, and it has reached #9 according to Klobrille on Bluesky. That’s still not the top of the hill, but it’s still quite an impressive feat, considering the games sitting in the top nine slots. Well-established free-to-play Xbox games Fortnite and Roblox sit in the number one and two spots, respectively, with Rocket League similarly claiming seventh. Additionally, fellow Game Pass game Minecraft, also a staple of the list, currently sits in fourth, while popular sports games NBA 2K25 and EA Sports College Football 26 take up the spots just in front of Grounded 2.

Data from Steam shows that Grounded 2 on PC is also being relatively well-received, though not near the level of its performance on Xbox. With more than 8,700 user reviews left so far, the game is sitting in the platform’s “Mostly Positive” category, with a 78 percent approval rating from players. It’s had an all-time peak of nearly 49,000 players simultaneously on Steam, and while numbers have dropped off since the early access launch, its highest concurrent player count over the last 24 hours still comes near to half of that peak.

While the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids-like adventure has already been putting up some surprising numbers in its early days, there’s still a lot of development left to go into the game before its full release. That journey took a little over two years for the original Grounded, and the roadmap for Grounded 2 shows big updates planned for the fall, winter, next summer, and beyond, including new creatures, armor, weapons, tools, and special features like ziplines and passive mutations.
