Roblox Changes Adult Content Policies Over Child Safety Concerns

Roblox Changes Adult Content Policies Over Child Safety Concerns

Roblox is making several changes to its adult-oriented content policies, including raising the minimum required age for viewing “restricted” experiences. The move is officially framed as a direct response to a recent influx of concerns over child safety on Roblox.

In mid-August 2025, the state of Louisiana sued Roblox, alleging that the platform failed to protect its millions of underage users from child predators and explicit content. Roblox Corporation called the accusation “erroneous,” citing its strict content moderation and consistent commitment to pioneering new child safety solutions as evidence that it’s making significant efforts to protect its users, 36% of whom are children under 13.

Roblox Is Reducing Visibility of ‘Restricted’ Content

The company has now announced two policy changes framed as a direct response to some of the child safety concerns recently raised about Roblox. The more immediate of the two concerns platform content with the “Restricted” maturity label, which no longer shows in search results or recommendations for users under 18 as of Friday, August 29. Roblox Corporation characterized the move as a straightforward attempt at decreasing the visibility of content that may not be appropriate for younger audiences.

Roblox Is Raising Minimum Age for Viewing Adult Content

Looking ahead, the company is also planning to completely block underage Roblox users from accessing Restricted-rated experiences on the platform. This will be done by raising the minimum required age for viewing such content, which will be raised from 17 to 18. While the exact timing of this change has yet to be announced, Roblox Corporation said it plans to implement it before the end of 2025.

Roblox’s New Minimum Age for Adult Content Has One Exception

The new age limit includes one exception for underage users. Roblox creators who are 17 and have previously published content rated as Restricted will retain access to their own experiences. They may continue publishing games with the adult-oriented label for now, but once the change takes effect, they will no longer be able to release additional Restricted-rated experiences until they turn 18. Age verification is conducted through the Account Info tab in the Settings menu and requires a government-issued ID.

The policy changes were unveiled shortly after Roblox announced plans to disable all unrated game experiences beginning September 30. The move aims to deliver a greater degree of certainty that underage users are only interacting with age-appropriate content on the hit platform. While some users welcomed the new policies, others have taken issue with Roblox Corporation’s approach to age verification, arguing that they should not have to provide a government-issued ID to prove they are adults if their very accounts are 15-plus years old, making it obvious that they are no longer children.
