Sequel to One of 2019’s Best Games Could Be Revealed at The Game Awards 2025

Sequel to One of 2019’s Best Games Could Be Revealed at The Game Awards 2025

A new European trademark has just been registered that could point towards Remedy Entertainment’s Control franchise appearing at The Game Awards 2025. Remedy has already announced that a sequel to 2019’s Control is in full production, though this trademark could also suggest that other Control-related pieces of media could appear at The Game Awards instead.

Upon its initial August 2019 launch, Remedy Entertainment’s Control received very favorable reviews from critics. The mind-bending Sci-Fi action-adventure game is currently sitting at an 82 on Metacritic, and has a Top Critic Average of 84 on OpenCritic. Control was such a hit with critics, in fact, that it earned ‘Game of the Year’ titles from outlets like IGN, Game Informer, GamesRadar, and Electronic Gaming Monthly.

In terms of industry awards, Control was nominated for a total of eight Game Awards, including Game of the Year, Best Narrative, Best Game Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Action/Adventure, and two Best Performance nods for Courtney Hope and Matthew Porretta. Control ended up walking away with the 2019 Best Art Direction Game Award. Control‘s award recognitions continued into 2020, where it received 11 BAFTA nominations, eight D.I.C.E. nominations, and five Game Developers Choice nominations. On the whole, Control earned 68 nominations across 2019 and 2020, and won 19 of those awards.

A New Trademark Suggests Control 2 Could Show Up At The Game Awards 2025

On November 27, MP1st discovered a new European trademark for something titled “Control: Resonant.” Though Remedy Entertainment’s name isn’t on this trademark registration, the name Nordia Attorneys At Law LTD is, which is a legal firm that Remedy uses frequently for filing trademarks, according to MP1st’s report. The Control: Resonant trademark has been given several classifications, including for video game services, TV, and films.

Announced all the way back in June 2021, Control 2 entered full production in February of this year and is expected to take around 15–26 months to develop, according to Remedy’s annual report published in March of this year. While it would make sense that this Control: Resonant trademark is related to Control 2, it’s also possible that it relates to a separate project under the franchise’s ever-expanding banner. Back in August 2024, Annapurna announced that it was partnering with Remedy to expand the worlds of Alan Wake and Control into “film, television, and more.” It’s possible the recently filed Control: Resonant trademark could pertain to these unannounced projects.

Regardless of what this trademark relates to, MP1st’s report suggests that it may have been registered ahead of some kind of official announcement at The Game Awards 2025. Remedy Entertainment has appeared at The Game Awards several times over the years. On top of earning nominations and wins for both Control and 2023’s Alan Wake 2, Remedy also revealed Alan Wake 2 for the very first time during the 2021 Game Awards. Of course, there’s no guarantee that Remedy will announce anything at this year’s Game Awards, but it certainly wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.

We’re less than two weeks out from The Game Awards 2025 now, and the rumor mill has started to pick up speed. As well as this Control trademark leak, rumors of a Death Stranding 2: On The Beach PC port have also cropped up following a recent ESRB listing. In terms of official news, Archetype Entertainment – the studio formed by ex-BioWare developers – recently announced that its Sci-Fi RPG Exodus would be receiving a trailer on December 11, confirming The Game Awards 2025’s first world premiere weeks ahead of it airing. The 2025 Game Awards is already shaping up to be an exciting night for the industry, and a Control announcement would only make it better.
