South Park’s Fortnite crossover may not be what you’re expecting

On Wednesday, Epic Games gave Fortnite and South Park fans their first look at the upcoming crossover that will bring Cartman, Kenny, Stan, Kyle, and Butters to the battle royale game later this week. As expected, the boys of South Park are coming to Fortnite in full-sized form, with mech suits similar to the ones the young Simpsons wore last year. But the Fortnite x South Park collab might be bigger than expected, with the introduction of dedicated points of interest like Cartmanland coming to the island.

Also, it looks like Epic didn’t forget to bring a towel. Towelie is here, presumably as an upcoming Fortnite Sidekick.

A new South Park animated short reveals what to expect from the Fortnite crossover, showing that Cartman, Kenny, Stan, and Kyle regularly enjoy a round of battle royale, but routinely forget to include Butters in their group. That villain origin story explains why Butters exacts his vengeance on the quartet as Professor Chaos, wielding the Stick of Truth — yes, from South Park: The Stick of Truth! — to send his classmates Fortnite‘s island.

There, Cartman, Kenny, Stan, Kyle, and Butters will battle each other wearing new DIY mech outfits that feature some smart references to past South Park episodes. Cartman, for example, wears an advanced Awesom-O Japanese robot suit similar to the one from season 8 episode “Awesom-O”; while Stan wears a ‘fit based on Cyborg Bill from season 3 episode “Chinpokomon.” Poor ol’ Kenny — a free Battle Pass Peely skin user — is forced to cobble together his mech suit from what he found on trash day. Those outfits will be available from the Fortnite shop, and players can earn other items from a free Born in Chaos pass.

Fortnite‘s South Park event kicks off Friday, and runs through Feb. 5. The update will also introduce Quints five-person playlists, so you can incorporate the fifth wheel in your friend group.

And yes, in case you’re wondering, South Park‘s creators have indeed acknowledged that The Simpsons did it before them.
