Sucker Punch Reveals That Ghost of Yotei Will Have a Non-Linear Campaign

The release of Ghost of Yotei has been recently announced and now, Sucker Punch reveals that the game will have a non-linear campaign.

The sequel to the incredibly popular Ghost of Tsushima has been teased for a while now. The devs revealed bits and pieces of information, like that the plot is set approximately 300 years after the events of the first game, or that it will not be as repetitive as you’d expect from an open-world game. On that last note, even open-world games usually have a somewhat linear campaign. Sucker Punch revealed that thay have done their best to avoid that.

The official announcement for the release date also revealed some bits about the pilot and the general story of the game. The plot revolves around Atsu, who lost her home and family to the infamous band known as the Yotei Six. Now she’s on a quest for revenge, hunting them down one by one, effectively becoming the avenging “Ghost”. Now, you’d expect that, even after the fact that the game has an open world, the plot is linear, and dictates which member of the “Six” you’re hunting next. But, Sucker Punch had something else in mind.

Recently, Famitsu had an interview with Nate Fox and Jason Cornell of Sucker Punch. While answering a bunch of questions about the game, the interviewers asked about the features of Ghost of Yotei that have been improved compared to Ghost of Tsushima.

Mr. Cornell said: “In terms of experiencing an open-world adventure, we have prepared the greatest freedom and vast map of any open-world game we have ever made. Players can travel freely while challenging the Yotei Six. Rather than being told to do so by the game, we have designed it so that players can search for the location of the Yotei Six themselves and seek revenge.” (automatically translated from Japanese)

In other words, you can freely choose which member of the Six you will hunt down next, making each playthrough practically unique. The linear method is a “safe” one, as the devs can progressively increase the difficulty of each encounter to make it challenging. So we are excited to see how Sucker Punch delt with the challenge level and the open-world. Remember, Ghost of Yotei is scheduled to be released on October 2. It can come soon enough!
