The Split Fiction movie is progressing ahead, it seems, as a report claims Amazon MGM Studios is nearing a deal to acquire the rights for the film that could star Sydney Sweeney, according to Deadline.
Wicked director John M. Chu is reportedly on board to direct, with Sweeney set to star. Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are writing the script.
Deadline said there was a bidding war for the Split Fiction movie rights, with Amazon MGM Studios ultimately winning out. Sony Pictures was another reported top contender.
Split Fiction’s story focuses on two writers–Mio and Zoe–who fall into a simulation based on a technology company that uses AI to take their ideas. The game plays out throughout a variety of fantastical settings and scenarios. Sweeney is reportedly being eyed to play one of the authors.
Split Fiction was developed by Hazelight and directed by Josef Fares. The game has sold nearly 4 million copies, according to publisher Electronic Arts. Hazelight is now making a new game, and Fares is feeling confident about it.
“It’s not like we’re feeling now, ‘Oh, shit, how will we top [Split Fiction] or do better than this?’ We just feel like… just wait until [you see] what we do next. I know it’s cocky. But that’s how confident we feel in what we’re doing,” he said.
Fares has directed four games so far, including Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons for Starbreeze and then A Way Out, It Takes Two, and Split Fiction with his own studio, Hazelight. It Takes Two has been the biggest success of the bunch, selling 23 million copies. Split Fiction had almost double the budget of that game.
GameSpot’s Split Fiction review scored the game a 10/10.
