The Batman Part II: James Gunn Explains Why Matt Reeves’ Sequel Was Delayed

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has explained the reason behind the latest delay for The Batman Part II.

Speaking on the Smartless podcast, Gunn said the release date was moved because director Matt Reeves needed more time to finish the script. “Matt wasn’t ready with the script and we need to give him time to finish the script in the way he wants,” Gunn said.

The Batman sequel, starring Robert Pattinson, was announced in early 2023, shortly after the first film’s release. It has since faced multiple delays, moving from a planned 2025 release to Oct 2026, and now to October 1, 2027. Gunn mentioned that the delay is about making sure the screenplay is complete before production begins.

He said that many big films run into problems when they start filming without a finished script. “You have the first act, that’s really good, let’s set a production date… And then they don’t have the last act, and they’re writing it during production. That’s just not how screenplays work,” he said.

Director and writer Matt Reeves, along with co-writer Mattson Tomlin, recently confirmed that the script for The Batman – Part II is finished. Actor Colin Farrell, who returns as Penguin, praised the draft, calling it “extraordinary”.

The new film continues Reeves’ planned Batman trilogy and is part of a larger “crime saga” that also includes the upcoming Penguin series. Reeves introduced this version of Gotham in 2022’s The Batman. It starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne early in his career as Batman. The Batman – Part II will once again star Pattinson as Bruce Wayne, with Farrell, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, and Andy Serkis as Alfred.

For now, the filming will begin in spring 2026. Warner Bros. has set the film’s release date for October 1, 2027.
